Reclaiming the Narrative: An Inclusive Public Sphere Needs Alternative Media

Journalism has faced profound challenges over the past few decades, and the question remains how media can effectively fulfill its essential roles: namely those of informing society, giving voice to the people, and holding power to account. In this session, well hear from leading representatives of progressive media projects to explore what defines quality journalism in todays social media driven landscape. Our discussion will cover strategies for how media outlets can operate sustainably, how audiences can be better involved in making sense of the world, and in what forms cooperation with activists and politicians can be considered desirable.

Thodoris Chondrogiannos, Investigative Journalist, Reporters United

Thodoris Chondrogiannos is an investigative reporter and member of Reporters United, a center for investigative journalism in Greece. He graduated from the Athens Law School in 2015, but then he decided to become a journalist. He has worked for Greek and international media. He speaks Greek, English, German, Italian and Russian. He has conducted investigations on the Predator Gate scandal, the networks of dogfighters in Greece and the transfer of Russian fossil fuels by European and Greek shipowners after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In 2019, he created his first award-winning feature documentary entitled “Silent Fish”, which addresses the issue of overfishing in the Mediterranean in the era of climate crisis. In 2023, he published his first book, narrating everyday life and exposing the wrongdoings of the military service in the Greek army.

Rivkah Brown, Commissioning Editor and Reporter at Novara Media

Rivkah Brown is a broadcaster, reporter and editor for the UK-based independent media outlet Novara Media, where she covers a wide variety of subjects, including the housing crisis, police brutality and Israel and Palestine. A former opinion editor at the Independent, Rivkah has written for the Financial Times and the Guardian and appeared on BBC Newsnight and Al Jazeera. She is co-founder of the leftwing Jewish media outlet Vashti.

 

Ernő Kadét, Journalist and founder of RomaPlay

Ernő havs nearly 20 years of experience as a journalist and communications expert, primarily at the Roma Press Center (RSK). He is the author of hundreds of articles and has received numerous awards. Over the past ten years, he has created and led several successful communication campaigns. He am the executive editor of Telepjáró, a documentary series focusing on Roma issues, which has aired 38 episodes (first on DikhTV, then on Partizán). Since September, RPC has launched a new YouTube channel called RomaPlay, where we present the Roma perspective through Telepjáró and a variety of valuable content.

Maribel Ángel-Moreno, Environmental and data journalist at Maldita.es

Maribel is a data and investigative journalist focused on climate and the environment. She has researched farming pollution in Spain and collaborated in a cross-border investigation on carbon markets (CDM) with Climate Arena for Journalism. She is now the Climate Editor at Maldito Clima, the department of Maldita.es focused on fighting climate and environment fact-checking.
