GEF’s Knowledge Communities address a diverse set of topics. They are built around and with (a) central expert(s), who deliver(s) a political stock-take political proposals and ideas for discussion with a wider group of actors. For this Knowledge Community, GEF works together with the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union on the topic of “A more inclusive transition: Bolstering Fair Participation in the EU’s Energy Project”.

About the Knowledge Community

This Knowledge Community can be seen as a continuation of GEF’s “Future of the EU’s energy project” Knowledge Community. It will take place during a particular, highly charged context.

The EU’s energy project is unmistakably one of transition (from fossil fuels to a new energy system based on renewables), with the European Green Deal representing the biggest cornerstone of the current EU legislative and political transformation framework. Recent crises and volatile social, environmental, geopolitical and economic contexts have confirmed the importance of pursuing the related energy transition at a fast pace, but they also expose and amplify the risks related to insufficient social support for climate action and transition policies.

Within this context and with new mandates approaching, the EU finds itself at a crossroads. We need an integrated approach that addresses the array of European concerns and that puts systemic narratives that show how households (and businesses) can better benefit directly from the energy transition, at the core of their political “future of the EU’s energy project” offer.

Our aim is to develop a “toolbox”, that can concretely show how to better include citizens and make them participate in the energy transition, and deliver proposals to advance a collective and just European energy project.
