About the Knowledge Community
The EU, with its Green Deal, has taken significant steps towards a just and green transition, and in that sense towards well-being of its citizens. Nevertheless, contradictions between the objectives of different legislative initiatives remain. Although the goal of well-being is present in various EU official documents, it lacks a comprehensive approach for transitioning towards a well-being economy, where human and planetary well-being are central to EU decision making.
Together with the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), we argue that this is largely due to the diverse range of concepts, metrics, stakeholders and initiatives that are involved in one way or another in policy developments related to well-being. Concepts such as post-growth, just transition, well-being economy and care economy are used by a wide range of actors, sometimes interchangeably, which hampers the efficient streamlining of these underlying topics into policy development processes.
In this context, this Knowledge Community aims to advance the European public and political debates on the well-being economy, identifying political ideas and proposals to ultimately enable the introduction of a strong EU policy framework on well-being.

A European Wellbeing Economy: Avenues for political action
The Treaty on European Union sets out that ‘the Union’s aim is to promote peace, its values and the well-being of its peoples’. While the EU has taken steps in that direction, notably through the Green Deal, a comprehensive plan for prioritising wellbeing is still missing in decision-making. This publication aims to address this challenge through a European Wellbeing Economy.
