EGAT Study Trip (Brussels)

By

Event Background

The European Green Activists Training (EGAT) consists of training sessions for young Green activists in three phases.

The first phase is the completion of the free online course Impact Europe. Then, in the second phase, the trainees participate national training sessions in their respective countries on domestic politics, as well as a session on European politics and institutions. The final stage is the study trip, which brings all of the trainees from across Europe together in Brussels.

The EGAT project aims to Europeanise existing training programmes for Green activists in several European countries by incoporating more pan-European content and to make these programmes more cooperative by enabling young activists to meet and network.

About the Event

During the four-day study trip, participants from Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland and Malta will have the chance to engage with professionals, politicians, NGOs and other activists operating in and around the European institutions, as well as with each other.

With a range of formal and informal training methods, including interactive workshops, the trip will be a valuable learning experience for young activists brought together by Green values and a motivation to enact change.

  • Meeting the participants and familiarising them with the Green family on a European level.

Democracy

Good Governance, Good Practices (Valletta)

By

Context

During recent years, examples of bad governance, such as the Panama Papers, the Luxleaks, Dieselgate as well as the Paradise Papers, and so forth, have emerged and raised questions about the rule of law, and fueled the rise of populism and EU scepticism. Not the least, Malta, the smallest of the European Member states, has come to the fore as a prominent journalist, who was investigating the Panama papers, was murdered in 2017.

An exchange on best practices of good governance on a European level is therefore urgently needed.

About the event

The one-day conference will discuss good governance in Malta and in the EU. Amongst other topics, the role of public services in Malta and the current state of play of governance in the European Union will be addressed. This project will enable participants to discuss issues and the way forward both on a local and EU level.

This public event will gather Green politicians and activists, civil society activists and journalists to discuss these matters while providing a platform for networking among Greens and civil society organisations active in the field.

Green jobs from a small state perspective. Case studies from Malta

By Uncategorized

The economic turmoil and the financial crisis faced by most of the European Union Member States can represent an opportunity to address the needs of the time by embarking on the ecological transformation of current production and consumption models in our societies. This transformation of the economy will entail a transformation of Europe’s employment strategies. Many of the jobs, which are likely to be in demand in the future, may involve tasks and require abilities different from those being demanded today. This is why we have to discuss the needed changes to the labour force and to analyse the prerequisites for the creation of green jobs, as well as the characteristics of these jobs.

The Green European Foundation (GEF) has been working extensively for the past three years on a Green New Deal for Europe – a comprehensive response to the current economic, financial, social and environmental crisis. The Green New Deal puts forward a set of reforms at micro- and macro-economic levels aimed at ensuring high levels of prosperity and well-being. The creation of decent employment and re-thinking the role work plays in our societies are central parts of this response, and thus need to be thoroughly addressed. This is how the project, “Green Jobs from a Small State Perspective”, developed by GEF with the support of Ceratonia Foundation in Malta, came about.

The current collection of articles focuses on the Europe 2020 Strategy to create new skills and employment opportunities and its relevance for Malta, as one of the smallest Member States of the EU. As reforming the labour market, as well as creating new green jobs, is a resource intensive process, Malta was chosen as an example of a small state without extensive financial or natural resources that would facilitate this transformation. We find it a worthwhile case study that constitutes an example for other Member States.
