Knowledge Community – Trade Unions and degrowth
2022
This round table is the first event of the GEF Knowledge Community, which aims to bring together experts from trade unions, academia, post-growth movements, alliances, and the broader Green Family. The aim this meeting is to bring new and cutting edge ‘’green(er)’’ ideas and concepts in the public debate and forge tomorrow’s political response to the challenging times we live in.
About the Event
Taking place at the International Trade Union House, the roundtable meeting is part of the GEF Flagship Initiative – Knowledge Communities which focuses on the Social Dimensions of the Green Deal. Together with our Partners Research & Degrowth we have embarked on a journey to jointly identify alternative models that address the social dimension of the green transition.
The meeting will be divided into two main sessions: Firstly, Nora Räthzel, Researcher from the Umeå University will present the broader concept of the Political Brief on the topic of Trade Unions and Degrowth . In the second session, the KC participants will have the opportunity to give their input, enrich and challenge some of the most controversial issues identified and provide space for more in-depth discussions.
Context
The GEF Knowledge Community roundtable meeting is a side-event of the broader ‘’A Just Transition beyond growth?’’ conference, which will take place 8-9th December in the International Trade Union House in Brussels.
The aim of the ETUI-ETUC-EEB-ULB-GEF conference is to build bridges between the trade union movement and the post- and de-growth community, and to situate a transformative just transition vision within the ‘beyond growth’ narrative. It should prompt reflection on how the (contested) concept of just transition and related policies, now a top priority in trade union agendas, fit – or can fit – with the futures proposed by post-growth scholars, and what just transition policies might look like in an alternative green deal for Europe that is not a ‘green growth’ strategy but a more radical societal and economic transformation.
