Challenges for 2024: A fair and Green Economy (Barcelona)

About the event

The pandemic may be over but economic instabilities continue. The effects of the war in Ukraine, high inflation rates, the energy crisis, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are just some examples of how the economic and social agenda will be impacted in 2024 in the fight against the climate emergency.

The year 2024 represents a change of cycle in Europe and in Spain. We must, therefore, define the priorities to move forward towards a green and just transition that allows European citizens make ends meet.

Anticipating the Climate Collapse (Barcelona)

By

About the event

The future we predicted is unfolding before us. Devastating climate changes have resulted from pushing the planet to unprecedented limits. We must continue to fight to reverse the effects we have, unfortunately, already provoked. But in the meantime, we are living with climate changes that are here to stay. What can we do about it? How can we fight increasingly hot summers in our cities? How can we ensure the protection of the natural environment, so that deforestation and mistreatment do not continue? How can we live comfortably without damaging natural and energy resources? What can we do to ensure that our children live in a less polluted environment? How can we help young people who suffer from climate anxiety? How can we continue fighting and prevent ourselves from succumbing to inaction and helplessness?

Democracy and its enemies

By

About the event

This debate will focus on the dangers that democracy in Europe is currently facing. We will explore how fake news, hate speech, and the discrediting of social movements, politics and organisations harm democratic processes.

The debate will focus on the influence these issues have on the younger generations and how young people experience messages such as climate change denial or lost hope in the face of the climate emergency or how unbridled capitalism delegitimise governments to favour of economic growth.

This debate is particularly relevant now that the pandemic and war in Ukraine produce a sense of unease, providing an opportunity for authoritarian views to become more widespread.

Project background

The event is the first one in a series of three debates, taking place in Barcelona and revolving around three pressing issues; the state of democracy, local policies for a fair and just transition, and Green Taxation.

Speakers

  • Pablo Simon, Political Scientist
  • Cristina Monge, Sociologist and Political Activist
  • Eudald Espluga, Philosopher
  • Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield, MEP Greens/EFA

Green-Red Dialogues: Italian Election Consequences (Barcelona)

By

About the event

Europe is facing a multitude of crises. Just as the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic appeared to be behind us, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine brought war back to the continent at tremendous human and material cost. As ordinary citizens continue to lose their lives to senseless violence, the rest of Europe prepares for a difficult winter of energy crisis and social unrest.

And as they say, in crises there are always ghosts. Those ghosts that some take advantage of to implant the ideas of fear, wrecking instead of building and fomenting panic to weaken the democratic system. It is in this context that we look to Italy, where the elections have produced a far-right coalition that is set to govern in the coming years.

How does it affect us that a far-right government governs in a strategically key country for Europe, a country that can offer “help” to Putin’s Russia? What consequences and lessons do these results hold for the left and environmental movements? Should we be worrying about threats to European democracy? Together with our speakers, we will explore these crucial questions for the future of Europe.

Green-Red Dialogues: Ukraine and Europe’s New Role in the World

By

About the Event

The devastating war in Ukraine is a humanitarian disaster, with horrific consequences for the country’s inhabitants and more lives lost every day. Europe has taken a leading role in the international response, not just because of proximity and the direct consequences that this unprecedented conflict is having for the continent, but also because it marks an undeniable turning point that demands a joint and transversal response.

This crisis, however, will require not just short-term, but also mid-to-long term action, and a shift in how Europe positions itself in various domains. There are economic, energy, geopolitical and other implications, and important choices to be made. Faced with all this, we need to create room for debate where we can bring green and left-wing perspectives to the questions and consequences we will have to face.

Anna Lührmann and Ernest Urtasun will try to give us answers from this perspective, a European vision that will draw different perspectives from both Germany and southern Europe.

Context

GEF’s Green Red Dialogues, organised with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons, aim to tackle pressing issues of our time and the challenges Europe faces with an explicit social and green lens. In doing so, these debates connect the red and the green and highlight Southern European perspectives on crucial topics like energy, mobility, and security in the 21st century.

  • Anna Lührmann – Minister of State for Europe and Climate of the German government
  • Ernest Urtasun – Member of the European Parliament, Greens/EFA

Next Generation – A Feminist Perspective

By

About the Event

This Green Red Dialogue confronts the European Union’s Next Generation EU fund, a fund created to support member states in their economic and social recovery and resilience from the COVID-19 pandemic. Such massive investment has a great impact in setting the EU’s economic path for generations to come, but are feminist issues being considered ?

We will discuss the gendered effects of the COVID-19 crisis regarding job creation and overall livelihood improvement, and of course, whether the scheme contemplates the fundamental values of gender equality .

Context

The Green-Red Dialogues began in 2020 as a way to reflect on current issues from explicitly green and social perspectives. The challenges we face as a result of the COVID-19 crisis are new and unpredictable. Today it is more urgent than ever to reverse the consequences of a capitalist system that not only brought forth the pandemic but has also caused irreparable cracks in our planet. A capitalist system that has been shown to foster social inequality and that assaults the Earth.

We cannot fall into fatalistic discourses and convey the message that all is lost. Instead, we must disseminate proposals and make the citizens of the European Union aware that another option is possible – that green policies are compatible with the economy, progress, and development.

With this in mind, the Green Red Dialogues continue in 2021, once again providing the space for European policy makers, academics, activists, and citizens to address the challenges of today – combining current affairs and in-depth analysis to spark vibrant discussions about greener, more socially just solutions.

Speakers

 Alexandra Geese – Greens/EFA MEP

Laura Lopéz – MP for Catalunya in Común

Dolors Comas – politician and anthropologist, Rovira i Virgili University

Welcome by Susanne Rieger (GEF) and moderated by Marc Rius

Practicalities

Date and Time: Tuesday, December 21st (18:00-19:00)

Audience: The webinar is free and open to the general public. There will be simultaneous interpretation in Spanish and English.

Germany after Merkel – Consequences for Southern Europe

By

About the Event:

Germany will be heading to the polls on September 26th to elect a new government. Citizens across Europe will follow the results with anticipation – also in Spain and Catalonia.
Is a green government possible? What will the results mean for German relations with Southern Europe? Will a potential Green Wave help Spanish and Catalan Greens gain more space and influence too?
We will discuss these and other questions with our guest speakers. Together we’ll try to get insight into what could be a consequential moment in European politics.

We are what we Eat: For Healthy and Sustainable Food

By

About the Event:

Our first Green-Red Dialogue of 2021 will tackle the sustainable production and consumption of food, from a multi-disciplinary approach. Because everything is fundamentally connected, from the mistreatment of animals and lack of respect for the vital cycles of nature to job insecurity in the countries that supply us. From landscape changes and deforestation to the air we breathe and consequences on our health.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to slow down and reassess our consumption patterns, highlighting the importance of local trade and local production and making everyone a bit more aware of the risks involved. With the help of our speakers, we will explore these issues further, hoping to take advantage of this moment to consolidate some beneficial changes as we move beyond the crisis.

Green-Red Dialogues: For a Green and Social European Recovery Plan

By

About the Event:

The economic impact of COVID-19, on top of health and social dimensions, has been particularly challenging for economies such as Spain, with a dependent and weak industrial fabric, and heavily dependent on foreign production.

We want to explore the European recovery fund as an opportunity to propose a new industrial model, based on a true Green Deal that offers a powerful alternative to what we have today. A model that places ecology, sustainability, and the transition towards clean industries at the very centre of what is to be achieved, while promoting social and territorial cohesion and encouraging greater cross-European solidarity.

We will approach this third dialogue from different perspectives, learning first-hand what the proposals are from the trade union world from the voice of its top representative, Javier Pacheco. We will also hear from German Green MEP Henrike Hahn on what is happening at the European level. Finally, we get a local view from Laura Campos, Mayor of Montcada i Reixac, one of the territories where industry is the economic base of the municipality and therefore highly affected by this pandemic.

With them, we will debate and make proposals to tackle a real transformation.

Context:

This event is part of the Green Red Dialogues. The main purpose of this series of talks is to reflect on current issues from a green and social perspective. At a time when we have to face the global challenges as a result of COVID-19, it is important to reflect on a green way out of the crisis. The current capitalist system has demonstrated that it promotes social inequality and that it attacks the planet, and therefore, all the inhabitants of the earth. We must urgently reverse the effects of the climate crisis and promote socially just and environmentally friendly models. We need to ensure that these proposals reach citizens, and explain that it is compatible with the economy, progress, and development.

The first dialogue dealt with green responses to the health and climate crisis, and the second explored Universal Basic Income as a possible solution in addressing our current COVID-19 crisis and others to come.

Speakers:

  • Javier Pacheco – General Secretary of CCOO Catalonia
  • Henrike Hahn – MEP Greens/EFA, Committee on Industry, Research, and Energy
  • Laura Campos – Mayor of Montcada i Reixac

Welcome by: Susanne Rieger – co-president of the Green European Foundation

Green-Red Dialogues: Minimum Living Income – A Step Towards UBI?

By

About the Event:

COVID-19 has once again put on the table the need for a change of model, based on solidarity and equity for all European citizens. If we apply the same instruments that we have used up to now, we are in danger of leaving many people behind, creating a socially and economically unequal Europe. What model of Europe do we want? How can we ensure that people can live with dignity? How can we contribute to the creation of a social security system that works for all? How can we make it possible for people to live with dignity from their work without having to accept multiple jobs or over-exploitation?

The second Green-Red Dialogue will address the topic of Basic Income. The Green European Foundation has worked with experts on this topic for the past three years, formulating “European Green Perspectives on Basic Income” together with several partner foundations including Fundacio Nous Horitzons.

Now is a good time to present the conclusions of that research and put back on the agenda an issue that in the current crisis situation is more relevant than ever. The effects of the coronavirus have left much of the population excluded and the outlook for the coming years is not very encouraging. Current welfare and subsidy models have been shown to fall short both in protecting groups at risk of exclusion and encouraging economic development in Europe.

According to experts in the field, basic income could: improve the situation of people with a low purchasing power; prevent overexploitation, job insecurity, and illegal work; prevent fraud by companies against their employees; allow higher taxes to be levied on high incomes; and enable economic development through empowering groups at risk of exclusion by dignifying them and thus contributing to a fairer and more egalitarian society.

These and other questions will be addressed in this second discussion on Basic Income – featuring Pepe Fernández Albertos, Aina Vidal, and Philippe Van Parijs.

Green-Red Dialogues: Green Answers to the Health and Climate Crisis

By

About the Event:

The first Green-Red Dialogue will address key issues such as health, basic income and the economy.

What health model allows us to face possible future pandemics? The European Union is diverse, and the member states have faced the crisis from different health models, which have proven to be more effective in this fight against the COVID-18? How can we work to make the health system of the member countries more efficient and inclusive?

This is a health crisis that today, more than ever, cannot be addressed without taking into account the link with the climate crisis. The model of consumption is linked to agri-food exploitation, which also causes the deforestation of the planet and in turn has consequences for our health. Should we ignore the fact that the macro animal farms have something to do with the origin of the COVID-19? And what about the air we breathe? How does it influence our health, our defences, and the increased vulnerability to severe symptoms of the coronavirus?

Context:

This event is part of the Green Red Dialogues. The main purpose of this series of talks is to reflect on current issues from a green and social perspective. At a time when we have to face the global challenges as a result of COVID-19, it is important to reflect on a green way out of the crisis.
