Green Post-Corona Talks with Bram Van Braeckevelt and Robert Fletcher

By

The COVID-19 crisis has led to closed borders and brought international travel to a halt and thereby dramatically impacted the tourism industry across the world. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) warns that “the impact on tourism enterprises and workers, the majority being young women, is unprecedented.” Within the EU, some of the hardest hit countries by the pandemic, such as Spain and Italy, are heavily relying on their tourism industry flourishing.

At the same time, with the almost complete suspension of international air travel, record low emissions and in many tourist hot spots a partial recovery of the environment (e.g. water quality in Venice) could be observed.

The World Tourism Organization launched the campaign #TravelTomorrow earlier this year. While it underlines the importance of tourism as one of the key drivers of international (economic) recovery, it also aims to highlight the need for a more sustainable approach to international travel as an effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

With most inner European borders opening again as of mid-June just in time for the summer holidays, the question arises whether the COVID-19 crisis can be a second chance for sustainable tourism that considers and tries to reverse the detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. Is a real transformation of the industry towards low or zero carbon intensity possible?

About the event

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic is having a grip on societies worldwide and will impact our lives long after the crisis is overcome. It is clear that we cannot continue with “business as usual,” but that we need to discuss positive ideas and concepts for a better, greener future and resilient societies now.

GEF is therefore hosting the Green Post-Corona Talks, a series of participatory online discussions with high-level experts, thinkers, and policy-makers, and the opportunity for participants to pose their most pressing questions to them live.

The talks will highlight what is currently at stake in the Corona crisis but also look beyond the period of the pandemic, and what possible solutions are already out there and can lend themselves to design the post-corona world.

The series will cover different themes from economy, over migration to gender, and bring in inspiring perspectives from all across Europe.

The project is implemented in cooperation with Oikos.

Green Post-Corona Talks with Özge Kara, Michael Piccinino, Adélaïde Charlier, Jada Kennedy

By

The talk wants to address intergenerational solidarity in the light of the COVID-19 crisis but also how the pandemic is specifically affecting young people – from implications on their mobility or exercise of rights, to of course how the economic crisis will especially impact youth unemployment and precarity.

With the recovery package recently presented by the von der Leyen Commission being entitled “Next Generation EU”, the discussion will also shed a light on how the recovery of the EU and its economy can be ensured with without leaving the young generation behind, and how a more ambitious climate policy must be at the core of that.

Green Post-Corona Talks with Marie Toussaint and Srećko Horvat

By

With the talk with Marie Toussaint and Srećko Horvat we want to discuss the prospects for Europe in the wake of this crisis. Some of the questions we will tackle are: What are the conflict lines in Europe today? Is this crisis a re-run of the previous Eurozone crisis? How is civil society organising in times like these? What is the relevance of the Conference on the Future of Europe announced by the European Commission for citizens?

Just Transition

Just Transition: a chance for cooperation between social and environmental movements

By

About the Event:

With their demand for a Just Transition, trade unions point out the importance of sufficient and decent jobs. The phase-out or conversion of fossil fuel-based industries requires the creation of new and decent jobs in climate neutral economic activities. This focus on the social dimension of transition has been picked up well in recent years by environmental and climate movements. New forms of cooperation are emerging, such as in the Netherlands in the context of the Climate Tables and in Belgium around a joint position on the future of aviation. This can strengthen civil society as such, and in its role of driving the transition to a socio-ecological society.

In this second webinar of our Just Transition series, we will delve further into this topic with two experts from the social and environmental movements.

Context:

The Just Transition project has as its aim to inspire and inform citizens about the implications of a just transition to a highly sustainable economy, which involves more than technical measures. We need a new economic system that cares for people and the planet, in which all costs and benefits are fairly distributed. How do we sustainably transform our labour market? How do we make sure the transition to renewables is inclusive and equitable? These are some of the questions we try to answer.

Speakers:

Kitty Jong (Director at FNV, the biggest Dutch labour union federation)

Mathias Bienstman (Policy Coordinator at Bond Beter Leefmilieu, a Flemish network-organisation facilitating the transition to a more sustainable society and circular economy)

Practicalities:

This is an open webinar. Please register here to receive an event reminder and further details on how to join in.

Public values in smart grids (Webinar)

By

About this webinar

A fully renewable electricity system is largely powered by wind and solar. These are intermittent energy sources. How do we keep supply and demand in balance? Data and artificial intelligence will play a major role in this balancing act. Smart electricity grids help adjusting supply and demand, using data on the forecasted weather, the available power storage and conversion capacity, and the willingness of companies and households to make their electricity consumption dependent on supply and price.

A smart grid is not necessarily fair, transparent, and privacy-friendly. It doesn’t necessarily allow for human control over algorithms and democratic participation.  How can we integrate these public values into the design of smart grids, from local microgrids to centralised macrogrids?

The Green European Foundation, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks, and Oikos will try to find answers to this question in a webinar. It will gather (local) politicians, practitioners, activists and members of energy cooperatives from various European countries, in a coronavirus-proof way.

The webinar will start with two presentations:

Fabian Reetz (100 prozent erneuerbar stiftung, Berlin) will explain the basics of a smart electricity grid and its importance for speeding up the transition towards a 100% renewable energy system.

Christine Milchram (Delft University of Technology) will speak about smart grids and energy justice. How can fairness, data privacy and other public values be integrated into smart grids?

The first comments to the presentations will be delivered by Yvonne van Sark, president of homeowner’s association Schoon Schip, which runs a smart microgrid in Amsterdam.

The webinar will be facilitated by Dirk Holemans (Oikos).

This is a joint event of the GEF projects A Charter for the Smart City and Cities as Places of Hope.

Cities as Places of Hope (Brussels)

By

About the Event

If we look at the European Union today, many things do not appear so bright: rising far right nationalism, Brexit, member States resisting alignment on policies concerning climate change or migration.

However, there is another, more optimistic perspective of Europe: one that sees how hopeful movements are unfolding and where progressive cities, together with their citizens, are succeeding in developing future-orientated answers.

Cities are the social laboratories where new answers are designed, tested and implemented. Think of local food policies, cities full of bikes and public transport, renewable energy systems. Those iniatives are embedded in cross-border networks, sharing knowledge and experience, aiming for a sustainable society that respects social and ecological boundaries.

We will welcome speakers at the forefront of these inspiring movements in cities, to discuss and exchange on their experiences and best practices!

Our Future: Fair & Healthy Food (Brussels)

By

About the Event

A systemic crisis permeates our food and agricultural sector. Food, turned into a commodity to generate profit, feeds the greed of the few rather than the stomachs of the many in a healthy way. Decades of yield maximization and export-oriented monocultures in a globalising economy have broken our food and agricultural chain. Business-as-usual has become impossible.

But the tide is changing. More and more research and policy reports and practices point to a hopeful alternative approach to food and agriculture: Agroecology, as an integrated vision, aims to reconnect soil, plants, animals and humans with the environment. It integrates the social dimension of a fair and sustainable food system. At the same time, more and more cities put this vision in practice in concrete urban food policies. It is now the time for a new EU policy, reflecting and supporting this holistic vision.
