The Tilting City

By Uncategorized

Context

Three out of four Europeans live in a city. Therefore, cities are essential to lead the transformation to a socially and ecologically just society. This radical change is more urgent than ever, as IPCC reports remind us: already 3.5 billion people are highly vulnerable to climate impacts. Different cities suffer from diverse ecological impacts and will be differently affected by climate change. And within cities, certain groups are more exposed to the effects of air pollution, noise, and extreme temperatures than others. Without thoughtful politics and policies, the most vulnerable will suffer the consequences. In this context, ecological justice is vital. Taking inequalities into account and repairing the damage to these people’s lives but also holding those most responsible for the climate crisis to account.

‘’When imagining cities, we for instance cannot lose sight of the farmer in rural areas feeding urban mouths, or the homeless person at the city centre bus station.’’

Objectives

This publication aims to draw an image of what the city of the future could look like. The authors show alternatives to the current urban models and how they can be future-proof. This text will hopefully serve as a valuable source of information and bring up new thoughts among citizens activist, policymakers and everyone interested in exploring ethical and ecological ways of living in cities in the 21st century.

Project Background

This publication is part of Cities as a Place of Hope project of the Green European Foundation. With this project, we aim to create a strong communication network and solidarity network that will enable access to information and policies by compiling experiences and needs on sustainable and green city governments and related policies together with green associations in different cities in Europe. In this study, making the city’s actors effective and visible in city policies is one of our biggest goals.

Resilience in the City, How?

By

Context

Resilient cities are able to withstand potential disasters, whether they are social, economic or geographical. The climate crisis, in particular, is  affecting the way people live in cities more and more. It creates social injustices with the most vulnerable communities being affected the most. Some local governments in Europe address these challenges by adopting transformative policies and innovative solutions to increase the accessibility to basic needs such as health, sanitation, housing, food, transportation, and water management.

The Green European Foundation alongside the Green Thought Association, aim to be a part of the solution by organizing the webinar “Resilience in the City, How?” within the scope of the ongoing project “Cities as Places of Hope”.

About the event

During this conference, various urban actors, academics and green activists will gather to raise awareness, build capacities and discuss how cities could become more resilient. Within the scope of resilience, the experts will focus on the social and ecological issues caused by the climate crisis and social injustice through various examples.

Feminist Leadership in the Ecology Movement (Istanbul)

By

About the event:

Women are everywhere! The women’s struggle continues on the streets, in public arenas, and also within the green movement. How are women and LGBTQI+ individuals represented in the ecology movement? What are the obstacles and challenges for women and LGBTQI+ representation? What are the needs to increase the number of organized women and LGBTQI+ in the ecology movement in Turkey and across Europe?

In light of these initial questions, we will discuss the intersectionality of the green movement and feminism under the frame of our “Feminists in the Environmental Movement” project, and explore what we can do to strengthen diverse representation by nurturing and sustaining feminist organisation in the ecology movement.

This day-long workshop will enable participants to take the first steps and gain a better understanding of the shared struggle, while listening to the experiences of local ecology, women’s, and LGBTQI+ organisations in the context of the intersectionality of ecology and feminism.

The Future of Eastern Europe Conference (Riga)

By

About the event

We are pleased to announce the Conference on the Future of Eastern Europe organized on 6-7 June in Riga, Latvia. The conference will be organised by GEF with the support of Cooperation Development Networks Eastern Europe (CDNEE), Green Thought Association (Turkey), Sustainable Development Forum Green Window (Croatia), Green Institute (Greece) and Ecopolis Foundation (Hungary). The Conference aims to unite the voices of young green activists from Eastern Europe to talk about the future of the region, and the challenges and opportunities for an ecological and progressive turnaround.

Context

This is the first event as part of our 2022 Transnational Project The Future of Eastern Europe and Ecodemocracy. Democracy in Eastern Europe is hanging by a thread. Authoritarianism is growing and nationalist narratives are reopening old conflicts. The Pandemic has exposed governments’ inefficiencies to react to any sort of crisis and contributed to heighten polarisation in an already polarised society. On the other side, hope is on the horizon as progressive movements are taking over power at the local level, as well as at the rapidly growing mobilisation of public around environmental issues. How could we leverage these small steps and use them to strengthen the Green movement in the region?

Programme

DAY 1 – (6th June) Monday

10:00-10:15 Opening of the conference (Live Stream)

10:15-12:00 Eastern Europe as a region – a story of turbulent transformation (Live Stream)
Description:  For more than thirty years Eastern Europe is a region of independent nation-states. During this period there was the promise that after a long struggle democracy and well-being would be achieved. Looking at it today, it is clear that most Eastern European countries are far from democracy and the well-being of citizens.
In this session, we will try to analyse and reflect on the last decades of Eastern Europe, mainly focusing to find the roots of current problems and possible solutions by looking back at the recent history – what shaped the region, how the democratisation and transition took place.

Speakers:
Sonja Schiffers, Director of Heinrich-Boell Foundation, South Caucasus Office
Anastasiya Dorofeeva, Belarusian Green party, Belarusian anti-nuclear campaign, hub “Green foundations”

Moderator: Luka Gudek, Green European Foundation

12:00-13:30 Influence of Global Powers: Eastern Europe at the crossroads between democracy and autocracy (Live Stream)
Description: Discussing political dynamics and transformation of Eastern Europe cannot take place without paying attention to global powers and their involvement in the region.
With this session we aim to map global powers: EU – China, Russia and US – and their interests; What role do they play in supporting democracy and progressive agenda or the opposite – encouraging and financing anti-democratic, right-wing and authoritarian forces.

Speakers:
Anton Cherepenko, the Free Hong Kong Center in Kyiv
Zarina Burkadze,  Associate Proffessor of Political Science, Ilia State University
Raluca Besliu, Fundraising Manager, Green European Foundation and contributor of the Green European Journal focusing on Eastern European affairs
Teo Comet, TILT Coordinator at European Greens, Board Member at Green European Foundation

Moderator: Giorgi Ptskialadze, Network Coordinator of CDN

15:30-17:00 War in Ukraine: Context, Present and the Effect on the region (Live Stream)
DescriptionRussian aggression against Ukraine is continuing. Every day we are witnessing atrocities, war crimes and violations of international law from the Russian side, at the same time Ukraine is bravely defending its people, sovereignty, democracy and even Europe as a whole.
In this session, we will take a look at a few different aspects of the conflict: the context of the war, the historical roots of Russian aggression, the current events, as well as what greens should do to help Ukraine, and how the ongoing war affects countries in the region.

Facilitator: Katya Andrieieva, Executive Committee Member of CDN

17:30-19:00 Energy – a veto point and/or a chance for democracy? (Live Stream)
DescriptionThe energy we choose reflects the systems we support. In this session, we will discuss energy as the core factor for sustaining authoritarian regimes and the way the energy sector influences political dynamics. As well as we are going to focus on the possibility of democratisation through energy – decentralisation, renewables and the prospect of energy cooperatives in Eastern Europe

Speakers:

Manana Kochladze, Bankwatch Strategic Area Leader – Democratization and Human Rights

Yevheniia ZasiadkoHead of climate and transport department at Ecoaction – Centre for Environmental Initiatives

Workshop: Sandy-Kyriaki Fameliari, ElectaEnergy Cooperative

Moderator: Lusine Kosakyn, Executive Committee Member of CDN

DAY 2 – (7th June) Tuesday

10:00-11:30 Eco-Democracy as a new paradigm for Eastern Europe
DescriptionThe Workshop aims to add a philosophical, ethical and institutional dimension to the conversations on the Future of Eastern Europe happening at the Conference. It hopes to bring together the different voices and ideas from the wealth of participants and facilitate a meaningful discussion on how to put Ecology at the Centre of Democracy.

How can we make democracy more ecological? What kind of changes do we need to apply to our thinking about participation, institutions and decision-making to put ecology and the environment at the forefront of our political systems?

These are some of the questions that we’ll be asking and trying to answer at our Ecodemocracy Workshop!

Facilitators: Anna Maniadi and Dimitris Papageorgiou, Green Institute Greece

12:00-13:30  Conflicts in Eastern Europe: the theory and beyond
Description
The session aims to provide participants with the basis of conflict theory and conflict resolution and analyze the conflicts in EE through case studies.  The session encompasses theoretical and practical parts that will be conducted through non-formal education methods. The objectives of the session are 1)to understand the concept of conflict (origin, causes, consequences), 2) to discuss the mechanisms of handling conflict, particularly, conflict resolution, and 3) to explore the conflicts that happened in EE in recent years, their consequences and current state.

15:30-17:00 Open Mic

17:30-19:30 Movements into politics: Green Wave in Eastern Europe (Live Stream)

Description: For the last decades, if you checked the electoral map of Europe intending to see how Green parties have been performing, you would see a clear pattern: Greens in the west and north do well – they get elected in national and regional parliaments, city councils, win mayorships and even participate in governing coalitions; while in the east – you would see a grey colour representing either absence of Green parties from the political landscape or lack of support and therefore relevance. However, in recent years the pattern is dissolving and becoming a blur, the Green wave spreading to the East.

During the panel, we will discuss the ongoing Green wave with newly established Green political parties across Eastern Europe with the aim to analyse current success, find the patterns and similarities, understand the importance of grassroots movements and civil society, map challenges, envision the future and their influence on the political landscape.
Speakers:
Justine Pantelejeva, Progresīvie, Latvia
Predrag Momčilović, Ne davimo Beograd, Serbia
Sopo Shubitidze, Mtsvaneebi, Georgia
Mozemo Croatia TBC

Disasters and risk management in the age of climate and ecological crisis

By Uncategorized

Context

The conference entitled “Disasters and Risk Management in the Age of Climate and Ecological Crisis”, organized as part of the “Cities as Places of Hope” project, was held online on 18 November 2021 between 13:00-16:00. In this conference climate crisis and risk management were addressed in the context of forest fires, health, drought, flood disasters and biodiversity by Erdem Ergin (disaster risk management specialist), Prof. Dr. Ali Osman Karababa (public health specialist), Dr. Akgün İlhan Boğaziçi University), Prof. Dr. Nesibe Köse (İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Forestry, Department of Forest Botany) and Dr. Emrah Çoraman (İstanbul Technical University).

Women* in Power

By

About the Event:

This international conference brings together speakers from all over Turkey and Europe to highlight commonalities and explore the solidarity and struggles of gender studies in green policy. It is the second edition of the conference, and just like last year, we aim to bring together activists, politicians, and academics to share their thoughts and build a stronger movement for gender and environmental justice.

Context:

In October, Turkey finally ratified the Paris Climate Agreement, asserting its claim to be an important part of the global climate struggle. However, in July its government left the Istanbul Convention against violence against women, despite being one of the first signatories and in defiance of countless protests, actions, and calls throughout the year.
The usurpation of the rights of nature on one hand and gender-based violence, discrimination, and inequality on the other are crimes that occur every day in Turkey. But faced with worsening conditions, the climate, ecology, women’s and LGBTQI+ movements have also started to grow. We witness their developing and spreading resistance against male domination, which imposes itself as the only reality, sees nature and people as resources and exploits them.
Green thought emphasizes the importance of combining climate and ecological struggles, women and LGBTQI+ struggles, for a better and liveable world where the rights of all people, living things and nature are protected. We believe in the need to emerge and the globality of solidarity – issues with which this conference seeks to engage. The international conference forms the closing of a year-long project on centralising gender equality and feminist perspectives in green policies.

About the event

During this webinar, we will put the focus on nature and gender equality. Join us to develop your network and discuss gender in conservation and climate policy. In many parts of Turkey, local people face natural disasters. People in the country are increasingly showing serious resistance to this issue, reinforced by the online and offline media. Gender Equality and Climate Crisis

By

About the Event

This meeting will welcome activists, NGO representatives, and other interested participants to explore the climate crisis and its relation to gender equality. We experience the consequences of the climate crisis in all areas of our daily lives because of extreme climate events and disasters in every part of the world. We are aware of the urgency to produce policies sufficiently addressing climate change. For this reason, we know that discussions on climate justice, mitigation and adaptation debates would be incomplete without addressing gender equality. Our open discussion will focus on three fundamental questions:

  1. What could be the steps to ensure gender-based climate justice, particularly in Turkey?
  2. How could we better communicate the common struggles of the climate and gender equality movements?
  3. What is the role of NGOs and civil society in climate feminism?

Context

This is the third of five meetings as part of the Feminist Policies in Green Politics project, where we will delve into different policy areas to strengthen European feminist politics in energy, economics, climate policies, ecology and food & agriculture. Our goal is to identify the difficulties in these areas and compile empowering policy recommendations. Besides these webinars, the project also features a series of Green Feminist Talks (podcasts) where we will hear more from inspiring activists and politicians across Europe.
