Terrestrial Forum: Horizons of Change- Summer School

By

About the event:

Sociologists define social change as changes in human interactions and relationships that transform cultural and social institutions. Well known examples of such change have resulted from social movements in civil rights, women’s rights, and LBGTQ rights, to name just a few.

The desire for change will be the driving force of this Summer School. We will explore together progressive policies, institutional practices and the fight for a just society within the limits of global sustainability. The National Forum’s purpose is to inspire progressive policy discussions and facilitate a networking space for social actors. This year’s program comprises three modules:

  • Affordable housing.
  • Democratization of public services and management of public resources.
  • A fair energy transition.

Context

Serbia has been under a conservative and authoritarian government for almost a decade. During this time, the powers in office have rapidly decomposed all the remaining welfare services and further deteriorated the already fragile democratic institutions. Whether one looks at the political, economic or social aspects, the Serbian society cries out for a radical structural change. Although we’ve witnesses a rise in resisting practices that show alternative models of governing, we need to strengthen our efforts to coordinate the counter-hegemonic voices to achieve better results.

Practicalities:

The program will unfold under the current COVID-19 measures. Travel, accommodation and food costs are covered by the summer school organizer. The official language of the school will be B / C / S, while some lectures will be held in English.

Dates: 23rd-29th August

Where: Sremski Karlovci (Serbia)

This event is organised by Green European Foundation with the support of MINISTARSTVO PROSTORA and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

EGAT – Croatia

About the Project

The aim of the EGATV is to familiarise participants with green topics (climate change, biodiversity and environmental protection, human rights and democracy, feminism, active citizenship), green policies and sustainable development policies, as well as the institutions of the European Union. Through various activities and discussions with the representatives of international organisations and the European Union, we aim to explore the opportunities of active and professional participation in the development of a greener and more just society.

Many EGAT participants remained active in the fields of sustainable development and green policies, while some even had the opportunity to do an internship and find a permanent position in the institutions of the EU.

Along with Croatia, participating organizations come from Finland, Greece, Hungary, Catalonia, Poland and the Czech Republic.

The project consists of three national training sessions and one study visit to the European institutions in Brussels:

  3. Third national training (Red Cross mountain lodge, Sljeme) – 17-19/12/2021
  4. Study visit to Brussels – end of February/beginning of March (exact date TBA)

On the national training sessions, all precautionary measures will be undertaken, as per the instructions of Croatian Institute for Public Health.

In case epidemiological situation in Croatia worsens and more restrictive measures are introduced, national training sessions will be conducted online or in a hybrid form, depending on the situation and following the recommendations of Croatian Institute for Public Health.

This call is open for everyone from Croatia from 18-25 years of age. Applications from individuals with less experience in aforementioned topics are encouraged. After the selection process, 20 participants will be selected to participate in the project.

One-time participation fee amounts to 450 HRK (60 EUR), while the costs of accommodation and catering are covered by the organizing team. For participants outside of Zagreb, there is a possibility to cover the travel costs.

Dark shades of green: The political struggle for the narrative of the young environmental movements in the Western Balkans

By

About this event

The right-wing has for a long time been associated with climate denial and justifications of industrial pollution. However, this rhetoric seems to be changing, and environmental issues are becoming central to right-wing politics. In the Western Balkans, environmental problems are emerging as a mobilizing factor across different political actors and social movements. Issues that are traditionally claimed by the progressive greens, are now coming into focus of the populist right, opening new fields for reaching and engaging otherwise passive citizens. Driven by the unsustainable re-industrialization, the growth in the construction sector, and new, often foreign investments in mining, fossil fuels, land grabs and destruction of nature, environmental threats are ever more mobilizing the citizens on the anti-establishment wave. Catching sight of the loss of the EU perspective and the increased post-truth crisis during the pandemic conditions, the right wing is not missing their chance. The struggle for nature is often painted with nationalist and traditionalist narratives.

On the other hand, the greens nor the left do not seem to be keeping pace with these developments, appearing unfit to offer credible alternatives to the populist narratives of the local grassroots movements. The environmental civil society initiatives, and the social justice and human rights organizations, are not connected enough, and their knowledge and experiences are atomized. In addition, many actors are insisting that the environment is intrinsically an “apolitical” issue, accusing each other of “hijacking” it. These processes are not only happening in the Western Balkans, however there is an important specific context related to the recent history and genealogy of the green movement. In the context of a blurred EU perspective for the Western Balkans, and in the absence of strong green and left alternatives, will the right wing populism succeed in appropriating the topic of environmental justice? How can the progressive forces be enabled to take the lead in environmental struggles?

The discussion is opening one of the important questions of many about the future of green politics in Europe. We are happy to use this opportunity to present Serbian translations of the publications with extended analysis of political ecology from the greens perspective – the Green European Journal editions: A World Alive: Green Politics in Europe and Beyond and 2049: Open Future.

Speakers:

Balša Lubarda is an environmental sociologist specializing in environmental communication, radicalism, right-wing politics and political ideologies. He is also a Doctoral Fellow and the Head of Ideology Research Unit at the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right, as well as a member of the Emancipatory Rural Politics Initiative (European branch). His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Environmental Values, Sociologia Ruralis and other non-academic outlets, including New Eastern Europe, Fair Observer, Open Democracy, Undisciplined Environments, Altre Economia etc. Balša has also provided commentary for The BBC Radio 4 and The New York Times.

Damir Zejnulahović is a PhD student of sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy of Belgrade University. He completed his undergraduate studies of sociology at the same faculty, where he took courses in “Culture” and “Politics” modules during his undergraduate studies. He got his Master degree in sociology, at the same faculty, defending his master thesis „Ideological underpinnings of a conservative Srpski pokret Dveri”. The focus of his research interests are political sociology, sociology of knowledge, historical sociology, critique of ideology.

Iva Marković is an environmental activist and researcher in political ecology from Belgrade. Her current focus is on water as a common good and on developing alternative policies for sustainable governing of natural wealth. Her interests are in commons, natural resources management, social impact of climate change, degrowth, just energy transition and ecofeminism. She is involved in organizing left and green actors and networking inside the environmental movement. She is a co-founder of Right to Water (Pravo na vodu) initiative, organization for political ecology Polekol, Women For Environment network, and active in the Save the Blue Heart of Europe campaign against small hydro projects in the Balkans.

‘Gaming Europe’ National Workshop 2 (Brussels)

By

About the event

With the “Gaming Europe” project looking at video games, the Green European Foundation aims to engage its audience directly in workshops on the use of video games by European teenagers aged 12 to 14. Based on the results of these workshops, we aim to assess with experts from both the education sector and the video games world whether video games can be used as a medium to address the topic of Europe in an engaging, fun, and non-patronising fashion for this target group and, if the answer is yes, develop a game concept. The ultimate, long-term goal of the project is to transfer this game concept into a game accessible to youth across Europe.

This national workshop’s main objective is to give the floor to young Belgians about their taste and habits in video games, their interest and knowledge of the European Union, learning to conceptualise the skeleton of a fun and interesting game with a video game developer around the theme of Europe and its values. Around the table, we will have both young gamers aged 12-14, but also nonprofit representatives working on education, and video game designers.

Practicalities

The language of the workshop is French and will be moderated by Action Medias Jeunes asbl.

This is a closed event.

The event is organised in collaboration with Action Medias Jeunes asbl, with the financial support of the Bosch Alumni Network

This national workshop’s main objective is to give the floor to young Portuguese about their taste and habits in video games, their interest and knowledge of the European Union, learning to conceptualise the skeleton of a fun and interesting game with a video game developer around the theme of Europe and its values. Around the table, we will have both young gamers aged 12-14, but also nonprofit representatives working on education, and video game designers.

Practicalities

The language of the workshop is Portuguese and will be moderated by 4Change.

The event is organised in collaboration with 4Change, with the financial support of the Bosch Alumni Network

‘Gaming Europe’ Online transnational workshop

This transnational workshop brings together national workshops’ participants with representatives from the video gaming world and non-profit organisations working on education on Europe. Based on the discussions and outcomes of their national sessions in Belgium and Portugal, it aims to highlight key findings, striving to harvest common lessons and ideas, and brainstorm on video game ideas that render the EU more graspable to young Europeans (12 – 14 year olds).

Practicalities

The language of the workshop is English and will be moderated by an external moderator.

This is a closed event.

The event is organised by the Green European Foundation, with the financial support of the Bosch Alumni Network
