Ecotransformation 2020 Summer School (Kostelec nad Černými lesy)

By

About the Event:

The transition to a sustainable, carbon-neutral future is a central theme of current European policy. Tackling the climate crisis – mitigating climate change and adapting to its inevitable effects – is one of the biggest challenges on this path.

We know how to do it. But can we convince others of that? Can we reach out to the important public and private partners and convince them that the transition to a sustainable economy is also in their interests? And does green politics go hand in hand with activism?

It turns out that we need to change the way we communicate on environmental issues. More and more people are aware of the threat of climate change, but it is difficult for them to imagine how to deal with it effectively. They need to hear a new story. The story of how we can handle the crisis together.

We cordially invite all those who are interested in green policy and want to take an active part in promoting to Ecotransformation 2020, a weekend full of interesting seminars, debates, presentations and experiential workshops grouped around several main topics:

  • Urban climate crisis and what to do about it: how to transform our cities to be better prepared for climate change and to actively contribute to reducing emissions.
  • Transforming the approach to landscape management: how to heal our landscape and increase its resilience to ongoing change.
  • Changing ways of communicating the climate crisis and other environmental topics: using the knowledge of ecopsychology and the art of telling the story of positive change.
  • Transformation of Czech ecological policy into a successful project – the role of activism, inspiration from neighbouring countries.

 Speakers:

  • Carmine Rodi – trainer, facilitator and consultant, an expert in communication skills, public speaking and storytelling techniques.
  • Helena Truchlá – editor of Aktuálně.cz
  • Ondráš Přibyla – founder of faktaoklimatu
  • Petra Kolínská – Zelený kruh (association of Czech ecological NGOs)

Public Values in Smart Cities (Webinar)

By

About the event

All over Europe, municipalities want to become ‘smart cities’, front-runners in the use of sensors, big data, algorithms and apps. Smart technologies offer opportunities for improving the quality of life in cities, for reducing their ecological footprint and for creating new urban commons. But they may also present threats to civil liberties and to social justice. The smart city should not be an end in itself. A smart city is only really smart if data collection and artificial intelligence are steered by values. How do we ensure that public values such as democracy, human dignity, privacy, equality and sustainability are put at the heart of smart cities?

This online workshop will offer an opportunity for politicians, experts, practitioners and activists from cities in the Czech Republic and neighbouring countries to share their experiences. They will explain about specific technological innovations in their municipalities, discuss conflicting values and identify best practices. The conclusions may feed into the online version of the Charter for the Smart City.

The speakers at the event include Richard Wouters (Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks, NL), Marie Schäffer (member of the Brandenburg Parliament, Greens, DE), Tomáš Koláčný (deputy Mayor of the City of Brno, Pirates, CZ), Jana Drápalová (city district Mayor, Brno-Nový Lískovec, Greens, CZ) and Ondřej Veselý (user application developer, CZ).

Platform

We will use the Zoom video conferencing platform. It is recommended to join the webinar via a PC. You do not need to install additional software. However, for the best user experience and full participation features, we recommend to install the Zoom Desktop App, which is for free.

A Charter for the Smart City

By Uncategorized

People make technology, but technology in turn influences our lives, our societies and even our ethics. The development of new technologies therefore cannot be left to engineers and managers; it requires public debate and democratic control.

This Charter for the Smart City was produced as part of the project of the same name, and puts the values of democracy, connectedness, human dignity, privacy,  sustainability, and equality at the heart of smart cities. Local politicians and active citizens who share these values may use the principles in this Charter as starting points for democratic debate and informed moral judgment on technological innovations in their communities.

The Charter was developed through a series of roundtable discussions that took place in cities across Europe, as well as from online consultation, involving over 100 experts, (local) politicians and activists who shared their ideas.

Handbook on Organising European Green Activists Training Programmes

By Uncategorized

In 2015, GEF and its partner Green foundations from Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic and Finland organised for the first time a project entitled “European Green Activists Training”. In the course of the project, the five partner organisations planned and organised trainings which explored the history, functioning and institutions of the European Union in a Green context. The training programme at the national level was complemented by a common European study tour to Brussels in spring 2016.

Considering the unique character of the European Green Activists Training programme, the project coordinators have decided to develop this handbook, disseminating good practice for future editions of the training within their own foundations, as well as among other organisations interested in training programmes for young activists. This publication is aimed at all organisations involved in educational activities for Green actors, such as Green foundations, Green parties, Green youth organisations and Green study centres in European countries, who are interested in discovering practical tools and tips on organising trainings which empower young people with the ambition to change Europe for the better.

The handbook has been updated in 2018, with a new design, and now features testimonials from previous participants on their experiences. It also includes tips from course coordinators on how to keep participants engaged after the training and on developing an alumni network to exchange ideas and knowledge.

Through this instrument, we mainly address those organisations which have little or no prior experience of organising European activist trainings, but we think that more experienced organisations can also find useful tips and tricks that may inspire their future educational projects.

European Green Activists Training 2015-2016 [VIDEO]

By Uncategorized

This video was produced in 2016 during the study trip to Brussels, which represents the final part of our European Green Activist Training project. This transnational project offers educational opportunities for young people interested in politics and activism. After a series of training in their respective countries, organised together with our national partners, this joint study trip enables the young participants to meet and exchange in Brussels with other Green-minded people from all over Europe. Furthermore, it provides them with a first-hand opportunity to gain knowledge of European politics during their visits to the European Parliament and other European institutions.

Find out what the organisers, coordinators and some of the participants from Finland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Austria, have to say about this experience and receive an impression of their study trip to Brussels in the video below.

As a transnational project, it is organised in two steps, starting with a local training with our partners and ending with a joint study trip to Brussels, where all participants get to meet, exchange ideas and visit relevant institutions.

We invite the youth living in Czech Republic, between 15-26 years old, who are interested in activism and European politics to apply for a stimulating training organised with the help of  the  Institute for Active Citizenship. This opportunity will include 5 local training around Czech Republic, during the following dates: October 20-30; December 9-11; February 10-12; March 24-26; April 21-23. In addition to these dates, this project offers a study visit to Brussels, which will happen in late January 2017.

Applications are open until the 23rd of September via this page. Find out more about this opportunity here.
