Centenary of Manuel Sacristán: Ecosocialism or barbarism!

By

Join us for a Green Red Dialogue to honour the legacy of one of the most influential critical thinkers of the 20th century while asking what kind of future Europe chooses to build.

About the Event

In 2025, we commemorated the centenary of the birth of Manuel Sacristán, a key figure in critical thought and an indisputable reference for ecosocialism in Catalonia and across Spain. This event is conceived as a meaningful tribute for all those committed to social transformation, ecological justice, and the defence of democratic values.

At a moment of profound global crisis – marked by ecological collapse, social inequality, and the erosion of fundamental rights -Sacristán’s legacy is more relevant and necessary than ever. His work continues to inspire critical reflection and collective action at the intersection of Marxism, ecology, and ethics. What might these ideas offer to Europe today? How can they help guide social movements and political actors in confronting ecological limits, democratic regression, and growing inequality? And what would it mean to place ethical responsibility and social emancipation at the heart of Europe’s political future?

It is in response to these questions that we bring together leading voices from the Green movement, feminism, youth activism, and critical political thought – to debate, inspire, and collectively explore pathways toward social justice, ecological responsibility, and democratic renewal in Europe.

Speakers

  • Benedetta Di Marte, Secretary General, European Green Party
  • Quim Sempere, Doctor of Philosophy and disciple of Manuel Sacristán
  • Cinta González Sentís, Secretary General, Federation of Young European Greens
  • Moderator: Andreu Mayayo, Professor of History

Before the dialogue begins, participants are warmly invited to share an informal networking moment together over a cup of hot chocolate.

Project Background

The Green Red Dialogues, organised by the Green European Foundation (GEF) with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons, provide a space to address the defining social and ecological challenges of our time from a Southern European perspective. From the rise of the far right to feminist struggles, from war and authoritarianism to the historical roots of ecosocialist thought, these dialogues bring together diverse voices to connect the red and the green – bridging social and environmental justice in Europe.

This dialogue continues that mission by revisiting the intellectual foundations of ecosocialism through the work of Manuel Sacristán, while encouraging open, critical debate capable of confronting silence, resignation, and inaction in the face of today’s crises.

Green-Red Dialogues – From Silence to Action: Europe’s Duty in the Face of Genocide

By

Join us for a Green Red Dialogue confronting Europe’s silence in the face of the ongoing genocide in Palestine, and exploring what accountability, justice, and solidarity should mean today.

About the event

Europe’s position on the ongoing Palestinian genocide has become one of the most urgent and divisive political issues of our time. It exposes profound contradictions within European diplomacy, from the continued provision of aid to Israel by certain EU member states, to the muted response of institutions faced with mounting civilian deaths and international law violations repeated countlessly.

This dialogue will explore the political, civic, and moral implications of Europe’s stance, both within and beyond the EU, and reflect on its responsibilities and prospects for peace. The discussion will also address the role of boycott movements and public mobilisation, examining how citizens’ voices opposing the genocide have been heard (or silenced) across Europe, with a specific zoom into Spain and how this EU country decided to take a firm stance as compared to other member states.

Targeted at those interested in foreign policy, human rights, and European democracy, this event aims to foster a critical and forward-looking conversation on the EU’s role in global justice and peacebuilding.

The webinar format will allow participants from across Europe to join and engage in this one-hour dialogue, which seeks to identify pathways toward a more coherent, just, and principled European foreign policy.

Project background

GEF’s Green Red Dialogues, organised with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons, provide a platform to address the defining social and ecological challenges of our time through a Southern European perspective. From the genocide in Palestine to the war in Ukraine, the far-right resurgence to feminist struggles, the Dialogues bring together diverse voices to connect the red and the green, bridging social and environmental justice concerns in Europe.

This dialogue continues that mission by focusing on Europe’s role and responsibility in the context of the Palestinian genocide, and by encouraging open dialogue that challenges silence and inaction.

Speakers

  • Aina Vidal – Member of the Spanish Parliament, Sumar

The Challenges of Metropolitan Sustainable Mobility

By

About the event

Sustainable mobility is a particular priority in metropolitan areas because of its impact on air quality, on the daily lives of millions of people and economic actors, and as an instrument of territorial cohesion. Public transport, cycling and walking are at the heart of a model that guarantees the right to sustainable mobility.

The Barcelona metropolitan area, with its population exceeding 3.5 million inhabitants, is a paradigmatic case in this debate, as it is an area that risks being sanctioned by the EU due to its poor air quality.

Within this context, what are the examples of good and bad practices of mobility? What are the challenges that lie ahead? Can we find successful sustainable urban mobility practices in other European cities?

These questions and possible answers will be the subject of this dynamic debate, bringing together diverse experts, academics, and local government actors.

Project background

This event is part of a series of debates entitled “Europe on the Move: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Iberian Peninsula” organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung EU with the support of Transición Verde, Instituto José Tengarrinha, Fundació Nous Horitzons, EcoPolítica and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

This series of debates aims to foster debate in Portugal and Spain around the future of mobility, bringing together relevant stakeholders from civil society, academia and politics to analyse and explore challenges and opportunities for the future of mobility and the Green Deal in Europe.

New Mobility: Economy and Employment

By

About the event

The decarbonisation of mobility is one of the great challenges of the European Union. The transformation it entails is complex and not without its difficulties, but it can be an opportunity to reactivate the economy and generate employment. The latter is a particularly relevant aspect in maintaining social stability, especially at a time when populism and the extreme right are on the rise in Europe.

In this event, we seek to analyse the challenges and opportunities of zero-emission mobility in terms of the economy and employment in Spain, paying special attention to the bicycle sector from a gender perspective.

The event is a roundtable open to all those interested in mobility, especially members of organisations and platforms working on the issue, government officials, politicians, academia, and civil society associations. Our aim is to raise awareness of the employment opportunities associated with zero-emission transport and to promote the shift towards more sustainable mobility.

The event will be held via zoom platform, requiring prior registration.

Europe On the Move: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Iberian Peninsula

By

About

In the face of multiple crises – climate and energy, geopolitical, cost-of-living – the challenges and opportunities for sustainable mobility are complex and evolving. What implications do these challenges hold for the specific contexts of Portugal and Spain, within the wider context of the European Green Deal? And how can we safeguard a green and socially just mobility transition?

By putting a spotlight on these challenges while fostering a trans-European exchange on best practices, this event series seeks to nurture the debate in Portugal and Spain around the future of mobility. It seeks to bring together relevant stakeholders from civil society, academia, and politics to discuss and explore key questions, tensions, and opportunities for the future of mobility and the Green Deal in Europe.

Events

Our debates series will unfold in various locations across Portugal and Spain, hybrid, and online formats.

Reading material

The project is based on the Heinrich Böll Stiftung European Mobility Atlas, corresponding Portuguese and Spanish language versions, and associated booklet, Present and Future of Mobility in Spain, and the GEF Metals for a Green and Digital Europe – An Agenda for Action, and corresponding Portuguese and Spanish language versions.

Anticipating the Climate Collapse (Barcelona)

By

About the event

The future we predicted is unfolding before us. Devastating climate changes have resulted from pushing the planet to unprecedented limits. We must continue to fight to reverse the effects we have, unfortunately, already provoked. But in the meantime, we are living with climate changes that are here to stay. What can we do about it? How can we fight increasingly hot summers in our cities? How can we ensure the protection of the natural environment, so that deforestation and mistreatment do not continue? How can we live comfortably without damaging natural and energy resources? What can we do to ensure that our children live in a less polluted environment? How can we help young people who suffer from climate anxiety? How can we continue fighting and prevent ourselves from succumbing to inaction and helplessness?

Democracy and its enemies

By

About the event

This debate will focus on the dangers that democracy in Europe is currently facing. We will explore how fake news, hate speech, and the discrediting of social movements, politics and organisations harm democratic processes.

The debate will focus on the influence these issues have on the younger generations and how young people experience messages such as climate change denial or lost hope in the face of the climate emergency or how unbridled capitalism delegitimise governments to favour of economic growth.

This debate is particularly relevant now that the pandemic and war in Ukraine produce a sense of unease, providing an opportunity for authoritarian views to become more widespread.

Project background

The event is the first one in a series of three debates, taking place in Barcelona and revolving around three pressing issues; the state of democracy, local policies for a fair and just transition, and Green Taxation.

Speakers

  • Pablo Simon, Political Scientist
  • Cristina Monge, Sociologist and Political Activist

Sustainable Mobility Cannot Leave Anyone Behind

By

About the event

The EU is promoting policies and actions aimed at reducing pollution and improving air quality, especially in the transport sector and in large cities. In fact, the Court of Justice of the European Union has warned that failure by states to respond could lead to the withdrawal of funding from the EU budget.

Urban tolls, low-emission zones and green taxation on car registrations are just some of the instruments that states, regions, and cities implement to make the polluter pays principle effective. But how can we mitigate the collateral effects of these measures on vulnerable groups such as workers dependent on private vehicles and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds? And how can we ensure that the ecological transition is just?

To explore these important questions, join us for a lively debate bringing together experts, foundations, and organisations working on proposals for a just ecological transition.

Speakers

  • David Lois, Mobility Behaviour, Professor of Social Psychology, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia
  • Laura Dieguez, Secretary for trade union action and just transitions, Confederación Sindical de Comisiones Obreras

Green-Red Dialogues: Italian Election Consequences (Barcelona)

By

About the event

Europe is facing a multitude of crises. Just as the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic appeared to be behind us, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine brought war back to the continent at tremendous human and material cost. As ordinary citizens continue to lose their lives to senseless violence, the rest of Europe prepares for a difficult winter of energy crisis and social unrest.

And as they say, in crises there are always ghosts. Those ghosts that some take advantage of to implant the ideas of fear, wrecking instead of building and fomenting panic to weaken the democratic system. It is in this context that we look to Italy, where the elections have produced a far-right coalition that is set to govern in the coming years.

How does it affect us that a far-right government governs in a strategically key country for Europe, a country that can offer “help” to Putin’s Russia? What consequences and lessons do these results hold for the left and environmental movements? Should we be worrying about threats to European democracy? Together with our speakers, we will explore these crucial questions for the future of Europe.

Tourism in Times of Climate and Social Crisis (Barcelona)

By

About the event

From the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine, inflation to the energy crisis – the tourism sector has been dealt many blows in the past few years. At the same time, mass tourism is itself implicated in several of our biggest challenges today: carbon emissions, housing shortages, crumbling infrastructure, poor working conditions, and the list goes on. As we look to transforming our economies and societies, the green and just transition of tourism is a crucial element.

In this half-day conference, we will tackle the question of tourism around three dimensions: mobility and infrastructure, labour and public services, and climate and environment. With experts, academics, trade unionists and politicians, we look forward to lively and thought-provoking exchanges.

Context

This event is part of GEF’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism project, which aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. By engaging stakeholders in partner countries and developing a European transnational discussion on these challenges, we seek to build a community interested to transform this sector in the direction of low or zero carbon intensity and with a specific focus on social and economic justice.
