Climate, Economics, and Gender

By

About the Event

Women and minorities are more likely to be affected by the impacts of climate change and environmental crises, but are also key to bringing about change in their communities. Countries with more diversity in decision-making have more ambitious climate policies, while the empowerment of women is also closely linked to better economic and wellbeing outcomes for all.

Nevertheless, women have been too often side-lined in the narratives of history and power, and their labour performed in service of society and the planet is often structurally undervalued or pushed to the margins. This webinar, organised with the support of the Green Economics Institute, will examine those points where climate, economics, and gender converge, providing thought-provoking insights to how climate feminists can reclaim these narratives and counter patriarchal exploitation of the planet before it is too late.

Context

This is the first of four public webinars as part of the project “Feminists in the Climate Movement,” organised by GEF with the support of Visio, Green Economics Institute, Oikos, and Fundacja Strefa Zieleni. With a closed training programme for selected Feminist Climate Ambassadors as well as a series of public events, the project seeks to build capacity among (potential) climate leaders, while highlighting the gendered aspects and impacts of the climate crisis to a broader audience.

Social Dividends as a Form of Basic Income

By

About the Event:

The COVID-19 pandemic has more than ever provoked the debate around Universal Basic Income as a potential policy solution to a host of challenges. Yet just as there is a diversity of arguments in support of basic income, there is a proliferation in models and pathways to implementation – each with its specific intricacies and consequences.

This one-hour webinar will explore some of these paths towards a basic income at the European level. Specifically, M.Soc.Sci Johanna Perkiö will present on social dividends as a potential form of basic income, based on her 2020 report for Vasemmistofoorumi (The Left Forum). Perkiö’s larger work has been on the history of discussions about UBI in Finnish society.

After the presentation, Lukas Korpelainen will comment on Perkiö’s findings and reflect further on the topic, followed by audience questions.

Context:

After gathering comprehensive expertise and setting up transnational networks through a three-year long project on universal basic income, GEF and its partners continue building on the outputs and successes of this work on the topic.

The transnational project ‘Change of Mindset – UBI, Climate and Social Change’ seeks to spark a stronger civil society dialogue to bring about the change of mindset needed to raise acceptance of universal basic income among the public and to deepen the debate on our conceptions of productivity and work. Together, we dive into the exploration of UBI as a tool of the urgently needed ecological transition and part of social security in a (post-)pandemic, climate change world.

Speakers:

Johanna Perkiö – project researcher at the University of Tampere and former chairperson of BIEN Finland

Comments by: Lukas Korpelainen – chairperson of the Finnish Greens’ social security working group and author of the GEF publication Basic Social Security 2030.

Practicalities:

This webinar will take place in English, and will be livestreamed to Facebook and YouTube. Participants can leave comments or questions via the chat. Register here to receive a reminder email.

Basic Social Security 2030

By Uncategorized

This GEF report uses the case of Finland to investigate challenges in current social security models, and provides a reform roadmap to a new basic social security system, with basic income as a central element.

This report is an edited version of the Finnish Green Think Tank Visio’s report ‘Perusturva 2030,’ published for international readers. The report looks at the challenges faced by the Finnish system as well as the principles for solving these challenges, and offers proposals for action for the parliamentary term 2019-2023 and further into the 2020s. While the focus is on Finland, the principles for a better social security system are applicable to any so-called developed country, and the concrete stepping stones and microsimulations work as examples on how to find solutions regardless of the current system in a given country.

This translation was realised by the Green European Foundation as part of its transnational project on Basic Income, a topic that will be further explored in the 2020 project Change of Mindset – Civil Society dialogue around UBI, Social Justice and Climate Impact.

Making Basic Income a European Reality (Tampere)

By

About the Event

The long lived dream of a basic income has gained relevance in Europe in the last few years. Changing working life and an uncertain economy has sparked the need for social security reforms in many countries. The Finnish basic income study has received world wide coverage. The goals have long been established but how do countries move forward to make it actually happen? Is a European BI possible? Should we approach BI incrementally?

In this seminar, taking place at the 30th European Green Party Council, guest speakers will discuss the status of basic income developments in different countries and outline paths to make the utopia a reality. Both national and Europe-wide points of view will be discussed. The seminar is a chance to spread ideas among the participants and help implement change across Europe.

Speakers

Via video: Jamie Cooke, The RSA Scotland

Pathways to a Basic Income in Scotland and the UK

Jane Millar, University of Bath, UK
Universal Credit: designing and implementing the UK’s new working-age benefit and how this differs from Basic Income

Kim Evangelista, Belgian Green party (Ecolo)
A Basic Income for the young: Inventing tomorrow’s solidarities

Lukas Korpelainen, Visio – Finnish Green Think Tank
A hybrid model for basic social security and the steps for the next 10 years in Finland

Her current research examines the impact of Universal Credit on couples, focusing on labour market decisions and family budgeting.

Kim Evangelista is a policy advisor for the Belgian Green party (Ecolo). He is in charge of economic, social and fiscal policies. He worked on a concrete Basic Income proposition included in the political program of the party for the May 2019 election. He studied economics and political sciences, and was later a researcher in applied economics. He worked in both the private and public sector

Lukas Korpelainen is a research coordinator at the Finnish Green think tank Visio. Earlier this year he wrote a report on improving the basic social security system in Finland. The work includes a new model for a basic income combined with means-tested benefits and a realistic first step with economic simulations. He has also helped the Finnish Green party develop its social security policies.

Jamie Cooke is the head of The RSA Scotland and leads on the development of the RSA’s activity in Scotland, through innovative partnerships, projects and programmes. He is also a leading advocate, writer, and speaker on the subject of basic income. European Green Perspectives on Basic Income

By Uncategorized

Throughout 2017 and 2018, the Green European Foundation transnational project Basic Income for all EU Citizens? focused on basic income and investigated the proposal’s potential in relation to employment, the recognition of work beyond paid work, and the gendered division of labour.

This collection of articles brings together experts on basic income from all across Europe, to debate and clarify different aspects of the topic and help develop proposals. The aim of the publication is to inspire the next steps in promoting the basic income discussion, one which encompasses some of the biggest challenges faced by society today.

In 2019, GEF will continue its work on basic income and contributing to transnational discussion with the project Basic Income – European Public Debate

EGAT Study Trip (Brussels)

By

Event Background

The European Green Activists Training (EGAT) consists of training sessions for young Green activists in three phases.

The first phase is the completion of the free online course Impact Europe. Then, in the second phase, the trainees participate national training sessions in their respective countries on domestic politics, as well as a session on European politics and institutions. The final stage is the study trip, which brings all of the trainees from across Europe together in Brussels.

The EGAT project aims to Europeanise existing training programmes for Green activists in several European countries by incoporating more pan-European content and to make these programmes more cooperative by enabling young activists to meet and network.

About the Event

During the four-day study trip, participants from Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland and Malta will have the chance to engage with professionals, politicians, NGOs and other activists operating in and around the European institutions, as well as with each other.

With a range of formal and informal training methods, including interactive workshops, the trip will be a valuable learning experience for young activists brought together by Green values and a motivation to enact change.

Handbook on Organising European Green Activists Training Programmes

By Uncategorized

In 2015, GEF and its partner Green foundations from Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic and Finland organised for the first time a project entitled “European Green Activists Training”. In the course of the project, the five partner organisations planned and organised trainings which explored the history, functioning and institutions of the European Union in a Green context. The training programme at the national level was complemented by a common European study tour to Brussels in spring 2016.

Considering the unique character of the European Green Activists Training programme, the project coordinators have decided to develop this handbook, disseminating good practice for future editions of the training within their own foundations, as well as among other organisations interested in training programmes for young activists. This publication is aimed at all organisations involved in educational activities for Green actors, such as Green foundations, Green parties, Green youth organisations and Green study centres in European countries, who are interested in discovering practical tools and tips on organising trainings which empower young people with the ambition to change Europe for the better.

The handbook has been updated in 2018, with a new design, and now features testimonials from previous participants on their experiences. It also includes tips from course coordinators on how to keep participants engaged after the training and on developing an alumni network to exchange ideas and knowledge.

Through this instrument, we mainly address those organisations which have little or no prior experience of organising European activist trainings, but we think that more experienced organisations can also find useful tips and tricks that may inspire their future educational projects.
