Green-Red Dialogues: Green Answers to the Health and Climate Crisis

By

About the Event:

The first Green-Red Dialogue will address key issues such as health, basic income and the economy.

What health model allows us to face possible future pandemics? The European Union is diverse, and the member states have faced the crisis from different health models, which have proven to be more effective in this fight against the COVID-18? How can we work to make the health system of the member countries more efficient and inclusive?

This is a health crisis that today, more than ever, cannot be addressed without taking into account the link with the climate crisis. The model of consumption is linked to agri-food exploitation, which also causes the deforestation of the planet and in turn has consequences for our health. Should we ignore the fact that the macro animal farms have something to do with the origin of the COVID-19? And what about the air we breathe? How does it influence our health, our defences, and the increased vulnerability to severe symptoms of the coronavirus?

Context:

This event is part of the Green Red Dialogues. The main purpose of this series of talks is to reflect on current issues from a green and social perspective. At a time when we have to face the global challenges as a result of COVID-19, it is important to reflect on a green way out of the crisis.

The European Green Deal: Implications for human rights and social change. An opportunity to tackle energy poverty?

By

About this event

This webinar is presented by the Green European Foundation and the Ariadne Network.

Despite some (such as the Czech Prime Minister) attempting to use COVID-19 to ditch the European Green Deal, it remains relevant, and some even see the pandemic as a characteristic of the climate crisis. The EU remains committed to the deal, and civil society is calling for it to be strengthened and used as a “greenprint” for the post-COVID-19 economy.

The European Green Deal is a significant step forward for the Commission as it resets its commitment to tackling climatic and environmental challenges and aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. The deal seeks to achieve this by modernising the economy, decoupling economic growth from resource use, and improving people’s health and quality of life; leaving no one behind. To be effective, the transition must be just and inclusive, paying particular attention to regions and workers facing the greatest changes.

The deal operates through a regulatory and legislative framework, which includes European Climate LawEuropean Industrial Strategy, and incentives to encourage private sector investment.

This webinar will explore the extent to which human rights and social justice feature in the Green Deal and its legislative framework. It will also analyse how the Green Deal could influence foundations’ programmes of work, particularly in terms of how the transition to renewables could be an opportunity to tackle energy poverty. Join this webinar to learn how foundations might support a just transition in Europe and ensure that no one is left behind.

Speakers:

– Anna Cavazzini, German MEP of the Alliance 90/The Greens
– Renee Bruel Director, Buildings, European Climate Foundation
– Clotilde Clark-Foulquier, Housing Solutions Platform Coordinator & Project Manager, European Federation of National Organisations Working with the Homeless (FEANTSA)

Moderator:

– Dirk Holemans, Co-President, Green European Foundation Board and Coordinator, Flemish think-tank Oikos

This is a closed event, not open to the public.

Green Post-Corona Talks with Philippe Lamberts and Mar Garcia

By
This is another event from a series of participatory online talks with inspiring guests offering an analysis on what is at stake in this crisis and what positive ideas and concepts there are for a green post-corona vision.

Join our Facebook event to stay alert for the live stream.

About the event

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic is having a grip on societies worldwide and will impact our lives long after the crisis is overcome. It is clear that we cannot continue with “business as usual,” but that we need to discuss positive ideas and concepts for a better, greener future and resilient societies now.

GEF is therefore hosting the Green Post-Corona Talks, a series of participatory online discussions with high-level experts, thinkers, and policy-makers, and the opportunity for participants to pose their most pressing questions to them live.

The talks will highlight what is currently at stake in the Corona crisis but also look beyond the period of the pandemic, and what possible solutions are already out there and can lend themselves to design the post-corona world.

The series will cover different themes from economy, over migration to gender, and bring in inspiring perspectives from all across Europe.

The project is implemented in cooperation with Oikos.

Freedom & Security in a Complex World (2017 edition)

By Uncategorized

Context

People all over the world are taking their future back into their hands. Together, they are taking initiatives in the fields of renewable energy, local food production, sharing tools, and so forth. This is the most hopeful movement of our time. Where the market and state fail, people are taking action. As free citizens, they are reinventing the collective, with open partnerships where personal development and social engagement go hand in hand. This observation seems to contradict what we experience every day. The system errors of our society model fill the newspapers: climate crisis, unstable banks, refugee flows. Accepted wisdom is that uncertainty is increasing. But both trends are happening, not by coincidence, at the same time.

Objectives

While examining the two interlinked concepts of Freedom and Security, this publication suggests that the answer needs to be the transformation into a socioecological society in the 21st century. It argues for the realisation of a societal project that strives for equal freedom for all people to flourish in security, within the boundaries of the planet, and proposes concrete steps towards it.
