Ecopolis: Hope Needs Action (Brussels)

By

About the event:

With a mix of panels, workshops, performances, and more, Ecopolis fosters cross-border and multi-lingual dialogues on the ecological challenges of our time. The 2024 edition is entitled “Hope Needs Action” and seeks to turn climate concerns into commitment. Featuring a wide range of authors, scientists, academics, practitioners, activists, artists, and policymakers, this event will answer to the simultaneous need for deep reflection and collective action to ensure a truly just transition in Europe and the world.

To this end, Ecopolis aims specifically to bring together different movements and thereby contribute to a flourishing and diverse European public space – fostering connections between the ecological movement, fights for social justice, decolonisation and anti-racism initiatives, feminist activism, and more. Enough – Thriving Societies Beyond Growth

By Publications

The ecological crisis shows that infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible. Meanwhile, the current economic system fails to secure livelihoods and exacerbates inequalities. There is an alternative to this self-destructive system: an economy of enough, which would provide for everyone’s basic needs while addressing greed and overconsumption.

The EU has the potential to lead the ecological transition. Although the Green Deal was a significant step forward, it remains entrenched in a growth-addicted economy centered on competition within a single market, and it does not sufficiently address social inequality. We need to envision a different European economy, rooted in a new paradigm, before we can build it.

In this essay, the authors build on the work of visionaries, both past and present, recognising that Earth is on loan to us from future generations. They explore how societies can thrive without depending on economic growth. The essay presents a compelling vision: fewer private jets, less inequality, fewer burnouts, and reduced waste, alongside more quality of life, more time for each other, more sustainable products, and a healthier planet. In other words, this essay provides the keys to imagining a different Europe – one that ensures a good life for everyone within the planet’s limits.

The ecological crisis in its entirety, including climate change, biodiversity loss and all its other facets, is without doubt the greatest challenge of our lifetime. […] For this reason, grand projects like the European Green Deal have begun to address social dimensions to guarantee that the transition is a just one.

About the authors

  • Dirk Holemans is director of Think Tank Oikos and former co-president of the Green European Foundation.
  • Lara Ferrante is a staff member at Oikos and wrote a master’s thesis on degrowth.
  • Elze Vermaas is a staff member at Oikos and former vice-chair of the Dutch young green think tank Jong Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks.

Endorsements

“Have you ever wondered how our social, economic and ecological crises are connected, and what we could do about them? This short and perfect book demonstrates how a ‘Wellbeing Economy For All’ addresses the interconnected crises of our time, and imaginatively motivates us to be part of its realization.” — Julia Steinberger

“For too long, the planetary crisis has loomed as a monstrous inevitability. But what if we dared to imagine otherwise? Enough paints a vibrant picture of a society that has transcended the limitations of endless growth, prioritising ecological well-being and human connection. It takes on the difficult task of envisioning a future where societies can thrive beyond the shackles of constant expansion and in harmony with the natural world.” — Amitav Ghosh

“This book does crucial work in offering vision, delivering hope and providing a way forward from a world where we are trashing the planet while creating miserable societies. It works towards a model for living within the limits of this fragile planet while allowing humans to thrive in a healthy future.” — Natalie Bennett

“Enough is a brilliant combination of imaginative vision, conceptual clarity and concrete proposals. A necessary handbook for an ecological civilisation.” — Roman Krznaric

“Enough challenges us to look beyond the current economic models that form the root cause of the climate crisis. If our human society is to survive this century, fundamental change is inescapable. This means embracing enough, coupled with a profound decolonisation of current world relations and building true democracy.” — Anuna De Wever

Enough: Thriving Societies Beyond Growth (Brussels)

By

About the event

The term “degrowth” often causes panic among mainstream opinion makers and many economists in Europe. Economic growth is the lubricant of capitalism. We are told that if the economy is growing, all is well. But what do we mean by growth? Should everything keep growing endlessly? The ecological crisis shows that infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible. Meanwhile, the current economic system fails to secure livelihoods and deepens inequalities. There is an alternative to this self-destructive system: an economy of enough, which would provide for everyone’s basic needs while tackling greed and overconsumption.

The EU has the potential to lead the ecological transition. Although the Green Deal was a significant step forward, it remains locked within a growth-addicted economy with a core principle of competition in a single market, and it does not sufficiently address social inequality. We need to imagine a different European economy, rooted in a new paradigm, before we can build it.

This is why the Green European Foundation is launching “Enough: Thriving Societies Beyond Growth”. Written by Dirk Holemans, Lara Ferrante, and Elze Vermaas, this essay explores how societies can thrive without depending on economic growth. It presents a compelling vision of fewer private jets, less inequality, fewer burnouts, and reduced waste, alongside more quality of life, more time for each other, more sustainable products, and a healthier planet. In other words, a good life for everyone within the planet’s limits. This essay gives us the keys to imagine a different Europe.

During this event, we will be joined by the authors of the book to delve into its intricacies and explore ideas for achieving true well-being in a society beyond growth.

This book launch is part of GEF’s focus on the Green Deal for All. It builds on research and events in 2023 that sought to explore how we can strengthen the social dimension of the EGD and what novel ideas and policy proposals can help us look even further, to future-proof ideas for thriving societies within planetary boundaries.

The Tilting City

By Uncategorized

Context

Three out of four Europeans live in a city. Therefore, cities are essential to lead the transformation to a socially and ecologically just society. This radical change is more urgent than ever, as IPCC reports remind us: already 3.5 billion people are highly vulnerable to climate impacts. Different cities suffer from diverse ecological impacts and will be differently affected by climate change. And within cities, certain groups are more exposed to the effects of air pollution, noise, and extreme temperatures than others. Without thoughtful politics and policies, the most vulnerable will suffer the consequences. In this context, ecological justice is vital. Taking inequalities into account and repairing the damage to these people’s lives but also holding those most responsible for the climate crisis to account.

‘’When imagining cities, we for instance cannot lose sight of the farmer in rural areas feeding urban mouths, or the homeless person at the city centre bus station.’’

Objectives

This publication aims to draw an image of what the city of the future could look like. The authors show alternatives to the current urban models and how they can be future-proof. This text will hopefully serve as a valuable source of information and bring up new thoughts among citizens activist, policymakers and everyone interested in exploring ethical and ecological ways of living in cities in the 21st century.

Project Background

This publication is part of Cities as a Place of Hope project of the Green European Foundation. With this project, we aim to create a strong communication network and solidarity network that will enable access to information and policies by compiling experiences and needs on sustainable and green city governments and related policies together with green associations in different cities in Europe. In this study, making the city’s actors effective and visible in city policies is one of our biggest goals.

Beware Europe’s New Green Colonialism (Brussels)

By

About the event

A delegation of Global South scholars and activists are launching a lobbying and advocacy tour of European capitals to discuss the urgent issue of an eco-social energy transition. Ecopolis: Fair(er) Futures Festival (Brussels)

By

Context:

Hope is something you need to deserve,” writes Greta Thunberg in The Climate Book. That’s why ECOPOLIS 2023 takes on the challenge of igniting hopeful activism. How do you turn concern or anxiety about the climate crisis into commitment? How to find a middle ground between naiveté and defeatism?

About the event:

Ecopolis is the day to meet people who care about a sustainable future. Because ecological challenges know no national or linguistic borders, Ecopolis is diverse, international and interactive. Ecopolis invites Belgian and international authors to debate the transition towards a socio-ecological society. Inspiring books, documentaries and debates between writers, academics and civil society thinkers about ecology, economy and society are at the heart of Ecopolis

This year the festival brings together different actors from the political, cultural and social environment to discuss this years focus topic, cooperation for a fair – fairer future as core value. This means tackling the conflicts rooted by competition as basic organisational principle on the individual and economic level. Cooperation is understood as cooperation between movements and allyships, the cooperation between countries and the Global South and Global North, as well as the development of commons, such as housing and energy cooperatives.

Speakers

  • Kim Stanley Robinson, novelist
  • Stephanie Collingwoode Williams, activist in climate justice and anti-racist movements
  • Geert Buelens, poet
  • Jessica den Outer, author and activists for the Rights of Nature
  • Peter Bosmans

Programme:

The festival runs from 10:30 to 21:00, offering different parallel activities, such as panel discussions, workshops or thematic walks around the city. This years programme highlights three different themes, each shedding light on the ecological crisis in a different way.

The first one is Facts and/or fiction. Does knowing more about climate help us make the right decisions? Where can we gain this knowledge from? Can politics and our personal lives also play a role?  How can fiction help bring about our hope and a sense of responsibility? Are these questions on your mind too? In this programme item, you will take part in conversations, a walk and performances with a host of scientists and readers (you, for instance) and share inspiration.

In the series of activities under the umbrella of How to, you will get your hands dirty: come screen printing, pimp your clothes and cycle around in the city visiting places full of hope. Engage with real doers on energy sharing, fair fashion and housing cooperatives. Discover how to transform your own commitment into collective action in your daily life. The debate is open!

In the third theme named The Power of Change you will learn how history shows that a better society does not happen by itself and learn in different workshops wat are the deep conflicts and challenges we are facing today.  It comes from sustained action by committed people. It took decades of social struggles to bring about the welfare state. Today, many are pushing for a quality society for all.

Dare to Care Book Tour: Poland

By

About the event

Care includes everything we do to preserve and restore the world. The multiple crises, or perhaps polycrisis that we are facing, show the importance of daring to care. The erosion of the welfare state, the ongoing war in Ukraine, the plundering of the Global South, and the crossing of planetary boundaries are alarming, to say the least. There is also a link between the exploitation of people and nature. Imagine what could happen if we found the courage to care for all people and other earthlings.

Can care offer us a fresh start based on interconnectedness and generosity? How can care, as an emancipatory principle, underpin politics and the economy? In this webinar, we will dive deeper into the content of the essay with author Philsan Osman, and have a Q&A with the audience.

ECOPOLIS Presents: Roman Krznaric (Kortrijk)

By

About the event

History may be our most undervalued resource for thinking about the future of humanity. The dead outnumber the living fourteen to one, yet how often do we really look to the wisdom of the past for new perspectives on the ecological challenges of our age? In this talk, public philosopher Roman Krznaric explores the possibilities of ‘applied history,’ sharing lessons from the last three millennia of human civilisation. He’ll tackle three fundamental issues: the climate emergency, our addiction to consumer culture and the global water crisis. Taking us on imaginative journeys from devastating famines in ancient China to the slave revolts of the nineteenth century, from commons management in medieval Spain to the economic secrets of preindustrial Japan, Roman will reveal how the forgotten stories of past generations can illuminate new, unexpected pathways for the turbulent decades ahead.

Context

Ecopolis is an annual gathering of people who think and care about a sustainable future. Because ecological challenges know no national or linguistic borders, Ecopolis is diverse, international, and interactive. At its heart are inspiring books, documentaries and debates between writers, academics and civil society thinkers about ecology, economy and the transition to a better Europe and a more just and sustainable world.

Speakers

ECOPOLIS 2022: Multiple (Hi)stories, Multiple Future (Brussels)

By

Context

“Thinking out of the box is exactly how the box thinks. We are the boxes we strive to out-think,” writes philosopher Bayo Akomolafe, speaker at the eighth edition of Ecopolis where artists, thinkers and doers break open our frames. Social, ecological, and economic crises force us to think about a radically different way of living. Can unheard stories help us change today’s reality? And not any stories, but the ones that link different generations, geographical areas that are far apart, or ancient knowledge and technology. Can activism as a form of love take us further than doomsday thinking? “The world is not about to end; we are already living with a different world,” Akomolafe continues. Ecopolis brings stories that depict an inclusive and sustainable future for this new world.

About the event

Ecopolis is the perfect occasion to meet people who care about a sustainable future. Because ecological challenges know no national or linguistic borders, Ecopolis is diverse, international and interactive space to learn, discuss and connect with like-minded individuals.

The conference welcomes Belgian and international authors to debate the transition towards a socio-ecological society. Inspiring books, documentaries and debates between writers, academics and civil society thinkers about ecology, economy and society are at the heart of this event.

Programme

Times

Sessions

13:30 – 15:30

Minority walk with Omar Fassi Fehri (EN/FR)

The Minority Walk is a tour of the Brussels city-centre to discover the public space of the capital, told through the lens of how the oppression of minority groups is still taking place in different ways.

13:30 – 15:45

The Brussels of witches: feminist guided walk (EN/FR)

In the 14th century, as we move out of the ‘dark’ Middle Ages and into the Modern Age and the Renaissance, women are plunged into darkness – or rather into the flames of the stake. What does our urban public space reveal about that time… and about witches today?

14:00 – 15:30

Workshop ‘Limits to Growth’ (NL/EN)

To keep our planet livable, we urgently need to rethink our way of living. In this workshop we will encounter inspiring voices from Latin America who show that another way of life is possible. A life in which ‘well-being’ is central instead of ‘growth.

Panel discussions and performance

16:00 – 18:00

Colonisation as exploitation of people and nature

In this panel discussion, writers and artists from various backgrounds will talk about decolonisation and explore  the many narratives that survived colonialism while offering alternatives.

18:00 – 20:00

Different jobs, one planet. Stories of strong commitment

Whatever your studies, whatever your job, there are always plenty of opportunities for strong commitment to creating a better world.

21:00 – 22:00

The environmental impact of war

War’s impact on humans as well as on nature and biodiversity is dramatic. Ecopolis will feature playwrights and performers Enkidu Khaled and Joachim Robbrecht in the premiere of their play on the impact of war on the environment. Their stories  point out the importance of peace for all forms of life on this planet.

“Just Transition For A Better World” Book Launch (London)

By

Context

This event is organized by the Green European Foundation (GEF) with the support of Green House Think Tank as part of the transnational GEF Just Transition project.

This project tackles the question of a Just Transition – transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family, including GEF in its specific role, is a leading actor in the development of futureproof politics and policies, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities.

About the event

As we argue in this book, a just transition requires a new social contract. A new contract for Europe – this time a social–ecological contract – can only be written from a global perspective, taking into account human rights and respect for nature worldwide. At the same time, this major transformation will need to be very context specific. The event will feature chapter authors introducing the concept of just transition, describing the Spanish experience, sectoral initiatives in agriculture and aviation, and the role of youth and climate justice movements.

Speakers

Chair: Natalie Bennett, former Green Party leader

  • Dirk Holemans, coordinator of Think Tank Oikos & Co-President of GEF
  • Joaquin Nieto, Former Director of the ILO Office for Spain

‘A European Just Transition for a Better World’ Book presentation (Brussels)

By

Context

This event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos Think Tank and Member of European Parliament Sara Matthieu, to present the book on Just Transition, published within the GEF project Just Transition.

This transnational project tackles the question of a Just Transition – transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population.

The differences between European regions are enormous, not least in terms of income disparity between and within countries. So, too, are the financial, innovative and structural capacities to shape and implement the transformative changes that are needed. From these perspectives, we critically appreciate the European Commission’s Green Deal.

This and more will be discussed this evening.

Speakers

  • Sara Matthieu, Member of European Parliament (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance)
  • Dirk Holemans, coordinator of Think Tank Oikos & Co-President of GEF
  • Joaquin Nieto, Former Director of the ILO Office for Spain

  • Philippe Pochet, General Director of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI)
  • Moderator: Annabelle Van Nieuwenhuyse

Dare to Care: Ecofeminism as a source of inspiration

By Uncategorized

Context

The concept of care has become increasingly important as COVID-19 continues to make its way through populations worldwide. However, care extends beyond the strictly medical: it encompasses everything we do to preserve and restore our planet. The erosion of the welfare state, the continued plundering of the Global South, the lack of solidarity, and the persistent crossing of planetary boundaries is alarming to say the least. We can only turn the tide if we leave the instrumental view of nature and humans behind and radically care for all earthlings.

Can care offer us a fresh start based on interconnectedness, and generosity? How can care, as an emancipatory principle, underpin politics and the economy?

Objectives

In this booklet, we offer you a crash course in ecofeminism and invite you to get inspired by different people and movements across the world. Ultimately, these lessons, which relate to the many challenges we face today, aim to encourage us all to question ourselves about what truly means to build an “economy of care” in Europe and beyond.
