Dare to Care: Ecofeminism as Inspiration

By

About the Event

The global Covid crisis brought healthcare into the spotlight. Care, however, extends beyond the strictly medical in that it includes everything we do to preserve and restore the world. The erosion of the welfare state, the plundering of the Global South and the crossing of planetary boundaries is alarming. There is also the link between the exploitation of people and of nature. Imagine we found the courage to truly care for all people and other earthlings, for our unique living world.

Inspired by ecofeminists worldwide, the authors wonder: can care be a new starting point, based on connectedness and generosity? Can care, as an emancipatory principle, underpin politics and economics?

In this webinar, we will dive deeper into the content of the essay, followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Feminists in the Climate Movement at the Green Hub

By

About the Event

Women and minorities are more likely to be affected by the consequences of climate change but are also the key people who can bring about change in their communities. Countries with more diversity in decision-making have more ambitious climate policies. But diversity doesn’t just magically happen  – it must be encouraged. Women and non-binary people need specific training to make change in traditionally male-dominated places of decision-making.

This year, GEF has selected and supported a group of twenty Feminist Climate Ambassadors to do just that. We have also run a series of public events on the nexus of gender equality and the climate crisis, and are exploring ecofeminism and ethics of care as a potential framework for societal change. Our Green Hub programming continues this work!

Programme:

11:00 – 12:30 Ecofeminist Roundtable: Conversation Circle on Ecofeminist Experience, with the support of Oikos

As individual selves, we are part of a web of relationships with both human and non-human others. Within ethics of care, we maintain nourishing and caring relationships.

In this workshop, we discuss what this entails for us, and we put ethics of care into practice by creating a safe space for us to connect, tell our stories and listen to each other. There is space for self-expression and deep listening.

The session will be completed by a moment of body-care (through breath work and movement). Care for our physical bodies supports the connection to ourselves and helps to solidify the connections between self and the self, self and the fellow participant, and ultimately towards self and the world we live in.

15:00 – 17:00 Rethinking People, Planet and Profit with Feminist Climate Ambassadors, with the support of Visio

Join GEF’s Feminist Climate Ambassadors to renew your thinking about the three dimensions of sustainability. The ambassadors and international experts offer you a new feminist lenses and facilitate constructive conversation on environmentalism, economy and climate policy & security.

  • With our ambassadors Barbora Majdisova (Poland & Sweden), Louisa Mandt (Germany), Gabrielle Sousa e. Hiltmann (Brazil & Germany), Ana Díaz Vidal (Spain & Scotland), Claire Woods (Ireland), and Dilara Asardag (Cyprus & Finland).
  • Additional speakers to be announced!

17:00 – 19:00 Training for Feminists in the Climate Movement: How COP Works, with the support of Green Economics Institute

This is a workshop to familiarise researchers, activists, and policy makers as to how they can make a difference and contribute to COP26 dialogues, with a particular eye on issues like gender equality and diverse decision making. We will start with introducing how the treaty works, what negotiations look like, and how different actors exert their influence. This is followed by an interactive workshop exploring participants’ own reflections and inputs.

  • With Michelle Gale (Gender Progress); Jean Lambert (GPEW, former MEP); Dr. Alexandra Harrington (Global Institute for Health and Human Rights), Dorothy Nalubega (Ecological Party of Uganda, Global Greens), and Miriam Kennett (Green Economics Institute). Facilitated by Peg Alexander.

Ecofeminist Round Table

By

About the Event:

This discussion will be a curated safe space for participants to engage in a long-form dialogue and open-ended conversation based on the booklet: ‘Voor wie willen we zorgen?: Ecofeminisme als inspiratiebron’ (Who do we wish to care for? Ecofeminism as inspiration)

We hope to create a stimulating environment to think and discuss about  the ethics of care and the importance for everyone to be listened and have a voice. Everyone is invited to engage with each other on their visions and versions of care.

The session will be followed by bodywork as aftercare (breathing exercises, stretching etc.) to help solidify the connections between self and the self, self and the fellow participant, and ultimately towards self and the world we live in. All are welcome!

Context:

Our second Ecofeminist round table takes place in Brussels, as part of the larger Ecopolis event. Ecopolis is the perfect annual day to meet people who care about a sustainable future. Because ecological challenges know no national or linguistic borders, Ecopolis is diverse, international, and interactive.

Feminist Climate Ambassadors – Countdown to COP26

By

About the event

We aim to build bridges across Europe for feminist climate change advocates and activists. This training will equip selected Feminist Climate Ambassadors with the tools needed to get their message through in their region and across their local media, to support sustainable and feminist community-level impact across Europe. In addition, the training provides space for more political-level conversation on the intersections of gender and climate change.
The sixth meeting looks ahead to COP26, exploring the focal points on gender and equality in upcoming climate negotiations and the influencing opportunities that the summit provides. Then, our ambassadors will dive deeper into the topic of ecofeminism and the lessons it holds for their work and activism.

Climate Feminist Summer School

By

About the Event

Women and minorities are more likely to be affected by the impacts of climate change and environmental crises, but are also key to bringing about change in their communities. Countries with more diversity in decision-making have more ambitious climate policies, while the empowerment of women is also closely linked to better economic and wellbeing outcomes for all.

We need this diversity and we celebrate it, but we also know that it flourishes best when it is pursued actively and obstacles are clearly understood. Specific support for systemically underrepresented groups, including women and non-binary people, is crucial in order to make a change in traditionally male-dominated spaces.

How are women currently excluded from climate negotiations and decisions? What are the lessons and insights from those leaders who have managed to break through? What are the narratives and structures that keep inequalities in place, and the “gender-blind” solutions that fail to challenge the status quo? How does the patriarchal exploitation of the planet relate to the lived experiences and activism of women of colour, indigenous women, LGBTQ+ women, and others? And above all, what can we do to address all of this?

This online summer school will feature a series of interactive sessions to explore the gendered impacts of the climate crisis, but also provide concrete tools, inspiration, and knowledge to equip participants in their own lives and with a special eye on COP26. We will facilitate encounters between activists, climate scientists, researchers, policy makers, campaigners, politicians, and the general public, in order to move this priority high on the agenda and spark connections across Europe and beyond.

Context:

This summer school is part of the project “Feminists in the Climate Movement,” organised by GEF with the support of Visio, Green Economics Institute, Oikos, and Fundacja Strefa Zieleni. GEF at the Green Days: On the Way to COP26

By

About the Event:

The past year has taught us painful but vital lessons about our relation to nature, the importance of often underfunded public services, and other topics which the Greens have been highlighting for years. Yet as the green wave continues rolling, and with pandemic lessons fresh on our mind, now is precisely the time to refocus attention on key challenges like the climate emergency and to ensure that green-minded activists and politicians are ready to take responsibility at all levels.

The annual Green Days conference is an important moment of learning and exchange for the green movement in Poland and beyond. GEF is hosting several sessions at this event – tackling important topics on the road to COP26. We will address the question of rare-earth metals, a crucial but challenging aspect of the energy and digital transition. We will also ask ourselves what feminist climate and foreign policy looks like, heading to Glasgow, as well as dive into local and regional recovery plans. Finally, we will host a session on agriculture – a sector that is at times particularly hard to reach in our pursuit of a climate emergency economy.

Context:

These seminars are being organised as part of the transnational projects Climate Emergency Economy, Metals for a Green and Digital EuropeFeminists in the Climate Movementand Cities as Places of HopeFor more information about each of these projects and the other partners involved, please check out their respective project pages on the GEF website.

Will The European Green Deal And EU Recovery Fund Benefit Women?

By

About the Event:

Gender mainstreaming and gender budgeting have become popular concepts in recent years, and the Von der Leyen Commission has highlighted gender equality time and time again as a key objective. At the same time, the European Green Deal and EU Recovery Fund – two of the largest investments in Europe’s economy and future – have faced significant criticism for their apparent gender blindness.

This webinar will examine whether and how the EGD and Recovery Fund will benefit women, and what can be done to push for better. Just like the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis is set to disproportionately affect women and other already marginalised groups. This makes it even more important to ensure that gendered policy perspectives – especially in times of crisis – are prominently present.

Context:

This is the last of four public webinars as part of the project “Feminists in the Climate Movement,” organised by GEF with the support of Visio, Green Economics Institute, Oikos, and Fundacja Strefa Zieleni. With a closed training programme for selected Feminist Climate Ambassadors as well as a series of public events, the project seeks to build capacity among (potential) climate leaders, while highlighting the gendered aspects and impacts of the climate crisis to a broader audience.

Speakers:

Alexandra Geese – German MEP (Greens/EFA), initiator of the Gender Impact Assessment NextGeneration EU report, supporter of the #halfofit campaign

Urszula Zielińska – Polish Green MP

Dr. Ewa Rumińska-Zimny – Economist at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics, associated with the Congress of Women and expert of gender budgeting

Audience: This webinar will take place in English and Polish (with simultaneous translation) and is open to the general public.

Registration: Please register in advance via this link.

SAFE – A Guide for People Targeted by Online Violence

By Uncategorized

This guidebook was originally published by Vihreät Naiset (Green Women) for a Finnish audience. It has now been adapted and translated by GEF and its partners for European readers.
As political conversation and activism have shifted more and more onto different social media platforms, so have the voices of harm. The nonconstructive and human rights violating hate speech creep closer to their targets. These targets are most often women, LGBTQI+ people, people of colour, and people with disabilities. Filled with resources, concrete tips, and case examples, we hope that this guidebook provides support to anyone exposed to this kind of online violence because of their advocacy.

This publication has been realised with the financial support of the European Parliament.

Feminist Climate Ambassadors – Future Frequency

By

About the Event:

Our aim is to build bridges across Europe for feminist climate change advocates and activists. This training will equip selected Feminist Climate Ambassadors with the tools needed to get their message through in their own region and media, to support sustainable and feminist community-level impact across Europe. In addition, the training provides space for more political level conversation on the intersections of gender and climate change.

The theme of the second meeting is future. What would our ideal futures look like? What would it take to get there? How do we stay optimistic and focused?

Context:

This training is part of the project Feminists in the Climate Movement, organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Visio, the Green Economics Institute, Strefa Zieleni, and Oikos. While the training is for selected participants only, the project also features a webinar series and summer school, which are open to the general public.

Speakers:

Maia Fandi – Facilitator at Educational Centre Visio (Finland)

Noni Makuyana – co-founder of Decolonising Economics

Programme:

12:00-12:10 Welcome

12:10 – 12:40 Guest Expert: Noni Makuyana on Decolonising Economics

“It’s not a coincidence that under neoliberal capitalism, racial inequality exists. Race is a social construct, and one that was used to further the colonial project, in pursuit of ever-growing economic wealth and power. It is essential to identify strategies that dismantle the system of white supremacy in the pursuit of a just transition.”

  • As our two previous public webinars have revolved around economics, climate, and gender, Noni Makuyana’s and Gubbi Bola’s work on decolonising economics completes the picture we have received, and offers an essential perspective to our understanding of just transition.

12:40-13:00 Discussion on assignments

13:00-15:30 Future Frequency workshop

  • Future Frequency is a workshop method which combines future-oriented thinking with change-making. The core of the three-step method involves challenging assumptions about the future, imagining preferred futures and making them a reality. Facilitated by Maia Fandi.

Women for Climate – A Just Transition

By

About the Event

What is a just transition of coal regions from the feminist perspective? What does transition look like in Poland and in other European countries? Do the current solutions ensure equal participation of men and women in decision-making processes? What role do women play in the broader just transition movement? In which approach to transformation is the gender perspective particularly relevant?

These and other questions will be answered by politicians and activists from Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany.

Context

This is the second of four public webinars as part of the project “Feminists in the Climate Movement,” organised by GEF with the support of Visio, Green Economics Institute, Oikos, and Fundacja Strefa Zieleni. With a closed training programme for selected Feminist Climate Ambassadors as well as a series of public events, the project seeks to build capacity among (potential) climate leaders, while highlighting the gendered aspects and impacts of the climate crisis to a broader audience.

Speakers

  • Dr. Miłosława (Miłka) Stępień – social and political climate activist, working on the just transition of coal regions in Poland, as well as issues linked to environmental protection, public transparency and civic participation. Chair of Association Akcja Konin (Konin in Action). Co-spokesperson of the European Green Party’s Conciliation Panel.
  • Jitka Nesrstova – longtime environmental activist by heart and fundraiser by profession. She worked for Greenpeace CZ for almost 13 years and co-founded the Coalition for Easy Giving that brings together major Czech nonprofits systematically raising funds from individuals. Since 2016 Jitka is part of Limity jsme my, an open grassroots civic movement fighting for coal phase-out and just transition. Jitka is a member of the Czech Green Party and served as Deputy Chair of the Energy Working Group in the past.
  • Katrin Uhlig – green politician from Bonn, Westphalia, Germany. She is the co-chair of the Green party in Bonn and deals in particular with energy policy and climate protection, incl. following the UN climate negotiations. Bonn is the seat of the United Nations World Climate Secretariat with many international organizations active in the environment and climate sector.

Climate, Economics, and Gender

Nevertheless, women have been too often side-lined in the narratives of history and power, and their labour performed in service of society and the planet is often structurally undervalued or pushed to the margins. This webinar, organised with the support of the Green Economics Institute, will examine those points where climate, economics, and gender converge, providing thought-provoking insights to how climate feminists can reclaim these narratives and counter patriarchal exploitation of the planet before it is too late.

Context

This is the first of four public webinars as part of the project “Feminists in the Climate Movement,” organised by GEF with the support of Visio, Green Economics Institute, Oikos, and Fundacja Strefa Zieleni. With a closed training programme for selected Feminist Climate Ambassadors as well as a series of public events, the project seeks to build capacity among (potential) climate leaders, while highlighting the gendered aspects and impacts of the climate crisis to a broader audience.

Katrine Marçal – Swedish writer and journalist, and author of the book “Who Cooked Adam Smith’s Dinner?”

Rosalind Miles – writer, broadcaster and journalist, and author of the book “The Women’s History of the World”

Dr. Sarah Parry – senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh

in conversation with Lynne Franks – writer, advocate, communications strategist, and founder of SEED Women’s Leadership Platform
